Chapter 1

The Story

She was lost in the dark twists and turns of her mind, deep, deep underground. She lay on top of the bed in her room, staring at the ceiling and unresponsive. A single tear rolled down her cheek as she heard the yelling from the first floor. Sniffling, she slid into an upright position, her long, unkempt hair trailing behind her. Her eyes widened and she stiffened as she heard a tap at the window. The ghost of a smile tugged at the corner of her lips, but then vanished almost as soon as it had appeared.

Slowly, she crept over to the window, carefully avoiding the floorboards that creaked, her feet performing an intricate dance as she arrived there silently. Soundlessly, she pulled up the blinds to reveal a girl perched on a tree branch with a grin on her face. The night was dead and cold, but somehow this girl managed to bring it back to life once more. The girl motioned to her to open the window. She did so.

"What are you doing here so late at night, Meryl?" she whispered cautiously after sliding the window open.

"What does it look like I'm doing?" Meryl laughed, "Honestly Muirenn, you're good with school, but when it comes to life, you're clueless."

Muirenn hesitated, looking over her shoulder towards the door. Muffled yells could still be heard from downstairs.

"Who cares about them? They don't deserve you anyways. Come on, just for tonight, you know you'll come back tomorrow, you always do. They never notice," Meryl said coaxingly.

"I suppose you're right," Muirenn replied.

"I'm always right!" the girl said chuckling, "Now come on!"

Muirenn slid shakily out of the window, gulping slightly as she looked down. The wet grass glinted in the moonlight. She extended her hand, which was promptly grasped by Meryl, who pulled her onto the branch of the gnarled oak with ease. Muirenn took a deep breath and savored the night air. She felt free, more than ever before. Meryl was like a torch in the midst of the darkness of Muirenn's mind.

Together they descended the tree and arrived at the inky blackness below. Muirenn laughed for what seemed like the first time in months. She spun around until she felt dizzy and fell back upon the grass.

"Come on! Are you just going to sit there all night or are we going to stargaze in the woods?"

"I'm coming, Meryl, I'm coming!" Muirenn called with a smile as she jogged after Meryl, who had already started to head into the woods.

This was their ritual most nights. However, in their opinion, stargazing was simply pointing out different stars, especially the small ones, which, they thought, were often overlooked. They made their way to their stargazing spot in the middle of a clearing in the heart of the forest. When they got there, they made themselves comfortable on top of ancient leaves from years gone by. Both girls sank into a comfortable silence. Muirenn broke it after a few minutes.

"Thanks Meryl, I'm really lucky to have a best friend like you," she rolled onto her side and looked into Meryl's hazel colored orbs, "You came and saved me tonight."
