Chapter 1

Short Story

by: sinned
Not a true story

In his later years, my grandfather had suffered from Alzheimer's. It was never anything that really bothered me, considering it was more on the funny side. It was the silly things like forgetting how to tie his shoes or how to use the microwave. Small things that we'd laugh about and then move on.

Over time, however, it got worse. Things that weren't as fun and silly, such as not recognizing my voice on the phone. These sort of things moved away from the fun of it all, and it started to really sound like something to not laugh about. But there was one moment in particular that made me realize how far my grandfather had gotten with his disease.

Him and I were hanging around his house when he picked up a framed picture of him and my grandmother. He stared at it for awhile, blankly. I casually asked, "You like that picture, eh, grandpa?"

He paused for a moment before saying, "Hey... who are these people?"

I froze. My grandfather couldn't remember what his wife of fifty-four years looked like. And even worse, he couldn't even remember what he looked like.

"Grandpa... that's you and grandma" I replied, "Don't you remember?"

Again, there was another pause. Soon he began to cry, and choking on his tears, he said, "No... no I don't. I don't remember! I can't remember! Why can't I remember?"

"It's the Alzheimer's, grandpa. You're losing your memory, an-"

"Alzheimer's, whatever, I don't care! I lived a life, worked hard, I existed! I should remember, shouldn't I?"

I didn't know what to say. There was long pause before he muttered, "I'm scared".

"Of what?"

"I don't want to die"

We cried for hours.
