MY CITATION!

Chapter 1

So yeah, I'm a lefty...

Here's a list of the problems I face being left handed and if there's any other lefties out there maybe we can agree on. Plus I can also say RIGHTIES HAVE IT SO EASY!!!!!

SO!!!!! On to my list!

1) The number of lefties to righties is 10 to 1. Yep only 1 in 10 people are left handed. That's only 10-12% of people in the ENTIRE WORLD!

2) Men are 0.4% times more likely to be left-handed than women. Being a girl lefty? Yeah, it sucks.

3) Being left handed has been considered the mark of the devil for centuries. Also a sign of neurosis, rebellion, criminality, and homosexuality. It has also been seen as a trait indicating creativity and musical abilities.

4) Many studies have found that lefties die as many as 9 years earlier than righties.

5) Some religions consider left handedness to be different and even bad.

6) Certain phrases in the english language associate left handedness with insults, one examples is a “left-handed complement” is actually an insult. There's many others like this.

7) The word left in English comes from the Anglo-Saxon word lyft, which means weak or broken. Left handedness in some dictionaries is associated with crippled, defective, awkward, clumsy, among many other word with bad connotations.

8) Research has shown a link between trauma during gestation or during birth with an increased chance of being left-handed. Mom's who give birth over 40 are 128% more likely to have a left handed child. My mom was 41 when I was born and she had an asthma attack an hour before I was born. Lefties have it hard from birth!

9) The stupid desks in school. In every single class, every single class has the opening to sit down on, on the left and the place for your elbow on the right. There's barely enough room for my left elbow. God, educations system.

10) In reference to a person’s sex life, a “left-hander” is a homosexual. Not all of us are gay or lesbian. No offense to those who are!

11) Even the word “dexterity” shows a right-handed bias. The term dexter means “right” and refers to being “right-handed” on both sides.

12) Arm wrestling, I always lose against righties. Amazingly, it's fair for a lefty to lose to a righty, but a righty to lose to a lefty is completely fair. Why? No idea.

13) Many cultures are terrible by considering left handedness a defect, or a curse or a sign of the devil. Why? No idea.

14) Research indicates that left-handers are more likely to become alcoholics, schizophrenic, delinquent, and dyslexic. They are also more likely to have Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, or mental disabilities. Scholars note that despite these maladies, left-handers have survived because they are traditionally successful in combat. Thank goodness I have non of these

15) In witchcraft texts in medieval Europe, it was the left hand that was used to harm or curse another person. To affect a curse, witches were instructed to silently touch the recipient with the left hand, which would convey the curse. Additionally, the devil supposedly gives the gathering a benediction with the left hand, as opposed to the right-handed blessing of the Christian church. He would also baptize or anoint with his left hand. Having red hair and green eyes PLUS being left handed would've had me burned at the stake a few hundred years ago!

16) In many Islamic countries, people are forbidden to eat with their left hand, which is considered “unclean” because it is used for cleaning the body after defecation. Additionally, “public display” or use of the left hand is against the law in some Islamic countries, including Saudi Arabia.

17) Studies suggest premature babies are more likely to be left-handed. Additionally, infants with low Apgar scores at birth are more likely to be left-handed than children who have higher Apgar scores.

18) Research suggests that left-handers are slightly more prone to allergies and asthma than right-handers are. I have both, but especially really bad allergies

19) According to the Journal of Nervous and Mental Disease, the brains of left-handers process emotions differently than those of right-handers and are more susceptible to negative emotions, such as anger.

20) In a recent experiment, left-handers who watched an eight-minute clip from the film Silence of the Lambs showed more fear than right-handers. Scientists believe that this may be because the right side of the brain is dominant in lefties and is more involved in fear responses. Meaning it's harder for us lefties not to be as scared as righties.

21) Can openers. That's all I have to say.

22) Writing left to right, we get pencil and ink all over wrists.

23) Binders were actually designed for righties.

24) Trying to sit next to and do anything that involves using your hands with a righty

25) Scissors are like binders. Designed for righties.

26) Less Left handed baseball mitts

27) Watches, daylight saving time, you get the idea...

28) The extra set of numbers on a keyboard is always on the right side. So is the backspace.

29) Zippers on jeans are meant for righties

30) Playing any string instrument. 4 years of viola for nothing.

31) Pens attached to chains in public places.

32) Tape measures won't work unless you like upside down numbers.

33) Microwaves, numbers once more on the right side

34) Hearing "YOU'RE LEFT HANDED?" And all those other comments

35) Teachers from a young age always pushing you to use your right hand...

There are many more problems, as well as advantages, but I just wanted to some complaining today lol. Here's a website with some pretty cool lefty facts.
