I need at least three comments to continue. Enjoy! :D
I jerked awake and found myself laying on the couch in the living room.
There were voices going on upstairs. They weren't very loud, but they were loud enough for me to hear them. They just weren't distinct enough for me to understand what they were saying.
I frowned. What now?
I sat up and stretched my arms. I groaned. My muscles were stiff from sleeping on the couch.
I stood up and walked towards the stairs and looked up. I sighed and started up the steps.
The voices were closer now. When I got to the top of the stairs, half the pack was there, talking. I only caught bits and pieces of what they were saying.
"Did you see.........."
"This is bad..........."
"Hey!" I yelled. Everyone quieted. "What's going on?" I asked.
They stared for a few seconds and then all of them started talking frantically all at once.
"One at a time please!" I yelled.
Logan, who was the same age as me (which was seventeen), stepped forward to explain. He ran a hand through his hair, his blonde hair looking disheveled, his blue eyes troubled. Then he sighed.
"The girl you found yesterday... isn't well." He said.
I frowned again.
"Who?" I asked, confused.
He looked at me meaningfully.
"The girl. From yesterday. The one who..." He trailed off, seeing my expression change.
"She's here?!" I demanded.
"Of course." He said, looking confused. "Why wouldn't she be?"
"I don't know." I said, a little confused at my outburst. "Wait, what do you mean she's not well?" I asked him, finally catching on.
"I can't really explain..." He said.
The stairs creaked behind me. I turned and found Jack climbing up the steps. His brown hair was all over the place. He had dark circles under his green eyes. I knew instantly that whatever was going on with the girl I brought yesterday, was not good at all.
Cambria, Jack's wife, came up close behind him, carrying a glass bowl of water in her hands and a cloth over her shoulder. Her black hair managed to look smooth, even after what I thought to be a restless night taking care of the girl. She looked tired.
Jack looked up when he got to the top of the stairs and saw me. His eyes instantly brightened.
"Alex!" He exclaimed, smiling. "You're awake!" He said.
I smiled wryly.
"Seems like it." I said.
He walked over to me in three long strides and hugged me. His large arms enfolding me and making me feel like a child again. He is like a father to me. He had taken me under his wing (paw?) after my parents had died.
He stepped back, still keeping his hands on my shoulders.
"The young girl you brought yesterday is here." He said, his green eyes troubled.
"I was told. How is she?" I asked.
"None too well..." He trailed off.
I looked at him, to Cambria, and back to him.
"What is it?" I asked anxiously.
"She has a..." He looked for the right words. "A very high fever."
"But it's not just that? Right?" I asked.
He shook his head.
"There's more to it. I just don't know what it is exactly." He answered.
Just then, a soft moan came from inside the room at the end of the hall. We all turned our attention towards the sound but no one moved.
Jack let go of my shoulders and walked towards the room, Cambria at his heels. All at once, everyone started following. He stopped and turned around, holding a hand up. We all stopped.
"I think it would be better if you all waited here." He said.
We all nodded reluctantly in unison and some of the pack members looked disappointed.
Jack turned to Cambria and motioned her to follow him. Halfway to the door, he turned to us and put his index finger to his mouth, signaling we should be quiet.
We nodded again.
He walked up to the door and knocked. No one answered, not even a sound came. He opened the door and walked in with Cambria behind him and closed the door.
There was a collective exhale and everyone looked down in silence.
