When Do We Lose It?

When Do We Lose It?

A short poem about some musings I've had recently.

Chapter 1

Don't let it go

by: Irishsong
When do we lose it?
When the world no longer has the magic it once did?
When we can no longer wail like we once did
Even though we want ever so to do so?

When do we lose the ability to do something without shame?
To play with our dolls instead of phones,
To pull out Legos on a weekly basis,
Instead of them gathering dust?

When do we lose the feeling of the end of the school year,
And the flowers are out shouting
REJOICE! LIFE IS BACK and we won't listen.

When is it we lose the love for life and live like we are dead?
When we forget the smell of rain
Or when the river is no longer swam in,
When we stop the song mid dance?

Why DO we grow up?
Can't we stay young?
Can't we be ourselves instead of having to be what everyone else wants?

Because they say to cry is childish, it shows weakness.
Feeling magic isn't normal, forget it.
Barbies are for babies, time to donate them.
Legos are cool, but technology is better, put the Legos on the shelf.
Time to get a job, there is no summer vacation for you anymore.
Live flowers? Eh, who needs them; I’ve got an app for that.
The rain only makes the world muddy and my shoes wet. The river attracts bugs.
And you suck at dancing.

Why DO we grow up?
Can't we stay young?
Can't we be ourselves instead of having to be what everyone else wants?
Because our childhood was donated to Goodwill.
Our wonder was shipped to the middle of the sea and anchored to the bottom.
Our hope was torn and used on that new toy in the store when your parents said you're too old for it.

Don't let go,
Don't forget.
