Alia Jones - Locked Up and Unwanted
Suddenly, the door was flung open and my mother stormed in, looking scary with her green face mask and her hair up in curlers. She held a pillow in her hand, and her face was contorted with anger.
"You stupid, useless child! Won't you ever let me sleep in peace?!" She screeched.
She shoved the pillow into my face and held it there, cutting off my oxygen flow. My screams became muffled, and I tried to kick and hit her, but it was hard to see in the dark. Black dots swam in my vision and the tears fell freely.
"Helen! Now is not the time, we can deal with her in the morning," the gruff voice of my father yelled from my parents' room.
Even in the darkness, I saw my mother's furious face as she ripped the pillow off of my face and barged off, slamming the door shut behind her and locking it.
I gasped for air, glad that this time she hasn't brutally beaten me after almost killing me.
My 'parents' had always been like this, coming close to murdering me and often abusing me. For me, the words 'mother' and 'father' were vile words that described vile, awful, cruel people. I hated them so much. Tonight had been like a usual night, filled with me waking up screaming and crying, and my parents trying to hurt me again.
I had woken up with the same thing that had woken me up every day for the past two years. My siblings. They ran off two years ago, and I hadn't seen them since. Ever since they left, my parents got more abusive, and I couldn't help but feel like it was partially Cathy and Scott's fault. But I loved them, and I truly did miss them. I tried to fall asleep, blinking away an image of their faces.
Pretty soon, I was in a deep slumber, dreamlessly sleeping.

It was the morning, and I was scared of what my parents would do to me. I carefully picked the lock with my fingernails, desperate to get out of here before I had to learn the hard way. By the time I had gotten the door open, my fingernails were bloody and torn, but I didn't care.
I quietly closed the door behind me, and I heard my parents' loud, deep snoring. If I ever ran away, I wouldn't miss this place at all. I grabbed the smallest apple in the basket on the table, a treat that I hadn't had in so long. I snuck out the back door and ran into the woods, happy to be in a place where I felt like I belonged.
Alia, you came today! Someone screeched in my mind. But it wasn't a someone; it was a tree! That's right, I can talk to plants, trees, animals, anything nature made!
I chuckled; it sounds foreign. It was a sound I hadn't heard or made in so long.
"Yes, I did. I can't stay away from this beautiful forest and all of the beautiful things in it," I explained.
I sat on a hill and ate my apple, quietly conversing with nature, happy to be away from my abusive family. It was around noon, the sun was high in the sky. Suddenly, a loud, buzzing sound filled the tranquil forest, interrupting the quiet, peaceful feel.
And then, everything was on fire. My friends; the trees, animals, plants, everything- screeched and screamed. My mind was filled with noises, and I was filled with pain.
I screamed and cried, I couldn't bear to hear these painful noises! No one should have to hear them! At one point, I think I laughed, tears streaming down my face the entire time. I clutched my gut, feeling like I had been punched, and my head felt like it would explode with all of the screams and cries for help.
"Stop! Stop it! I can't help you! Please stop screaming and crying, it hurts! It hurts," I sobbed, clawing at my ears.
I fell to the ground, wishing it would all stop!
I suddenly got up and ran, crashing through the trees. I didn't care where I went, I just needed to get away from here. My clothes caught on fire, and I screamed, blindly crashing through bushes, trees, and shrubs, my fingers jammed into my ears, trying to block out the sounds.
I eventually made it out past the forest and tripped and fell in the grass next to a highway.
I curled up into a fetal position, the fire was already off of me. I sobbed and clutched my head, scared of all of the screams and shouts.
I finally couldn't take it and I passed out as I felt a strong pair of arms wrap around me.

I woke up in the backseat of a car. My arms and legs were bound and I was gagged. I feared that I had been kidnapped, but I suddenly recognized the smell of cigarettes and realized that it was my father's car. I calmed down and suddenly started panicking again. What would he do to me?!
Pretty soon, I felt the car turn, and then roll to a stop. My father got out, slammed the front door, and opened the back door.
"Well, well, well, looks like Princess decided to wake up," he sneered. His breath stunk of cigarettes and breath mints. I almost laughed at his futile attempt to cover the stench up.
Suddenly, he started punching me and slapping me. He touched me and I started screaming and crying. After what felt like forever, he ripped the gag off, threatened me, and started driving again.
We finally turned and my father parked the car. He untied me, then shoved me out of the car. I rubbed my sore wrists, and began to walk as be shouted at me to move.
The building wasn't too big, but it still looked large. It was a dull color, and a large sign that said 'Brookside' hung above the door.
My father shoved me inside, and I knew better than to ask questions, but I was still curious.
"What is this place?" I squeaked.
"It's for insane people. I want you away from me and Helen," he barked, not bothering to quiet his voice. The people at the counter looked up and smiled coldly.
"What can I do for you, sir?" A woman asked.
My father pushed me forward, "I want to get her out of my life. I don't care what you do to her, just don't ever let me see her sorry face again,"
A nurse came up to me and led me into a room.
She turned to me and said, "Welcome to Brookside."
