Chapter 1

If only.

"Get out of here! NOW!"

I stumbled out of the house, half-blinded by my tears, my ears still ringing with my mother's screams. I pulled my hood up to cover my now blue hair and walked over to my safe place that I've spent most of my summers ever since I got my letter.

It wasn't really safe. Anyone could find it, like Alex did the first time I ever hid out there for a week after running away. It's in the woods behind our own backyard, you'd think my mother would look a little bloody harder.

I made my way through the trees until I reached the edge of my clearing. It was lined with branches from all the trees, making it feel like a tree igloo.

I plopped down on the ground, leaning against the base of a tree. My tears were already gone. Now my hair was black again, but not my real color black. It was black as night as my sadness turned to anger.

I grabbed a rock that was beside me and hurled it across the clearing in anger. It smacked against a tree with a loud crack!

"Nice one." I heard behind me.

I whipped around to see Alex leaning against the tree next to me, looking down at me. I rolled my eyes. "Shut up, Alex."

"So...what'd you do this time?" Alex slid down until he was sitting on the ground next to me.

I let my head fall back against the tree trunk. "It wasn't me. She was yelling at that bloke Jacob, telling him to get out, and I accidentally walked in on it. My hair had been yellow without me realizing it. I was just thinking about how we're going to Hogwarts tomorrow..."

I trailed off, knowing Alex would be able to fill in the rest.

He sighed, and I knew what he was thinking. It's what I've been thinking ever since I could remember: If only I wasn't a Metamorphagus, maybe my mom would love me like she did Alex. Not that she really loved him. But she treated him waaay better than she treated me. And if I wasn't a Metamorphagus, maybe then I would actually fit in the wizarding world also.

I felt Alex tug on my hair and turned to look at it. It was a depressing blue color again.

"Raven, I've told you a thousand times. You can't let Mum get to you like that." Alex said softly, putting his arm around my shoulders.

I sighed and laid my head on his shoulder.

"Raven? It's going to be our fifth year. Have you made a single friend while we've been at Hogwarts?" Alex raised an eyebrow at me.

I rolled my eyes. "Of course I have bloody friends! Hagrid, Skylar, and you."

Alex half-laughed. "Raven, I hate to tell you this, but Hagrid's a teacher. He doesn't count. Neither does Skylar, your owl."

"I suppose you're going to tell me that you don't count either?" I said, crossing my arms over my chest.

"Well of course I do, but seriously Raven?" Alex looked me in the eye. "Five years and your only friends are a teacher, an owl, and your twin brother?"

I looked away knowing that my hair would be turning a brownish-red color: shame.

"Look, all I'm saying, Raven, is to just try and be a little more outgoing this year. Deal?" Alex said, turning my head to look me in the eyes again.

I sighed. "Fine. I'm not making any promises, though."

Alex smiled and stood up, pulling me up with him. I had to tilt my head back to look at him. Even though we were twins, Alex was almost a head taller than me.

"Have you packed your trunk yet?" He asked, putting his hands in his pockets.

"Bloody hell, no. Do I ever have it done this early?" I grinned as Alex laughed.

"Well, we should probably go get that done, 'specially since we're gonna have to get on a train early tomorrow morning to get to London." Alex said, turning towards the house.

I put my hood down because my hair had returned to its natural color: so black that it was almost purple, which is how I wish it would stay.

Then I followed Alex as we walked to the house, already discussing where we'd put our school supplies when we'd gotten them in Diagon Alley last week.

I couldn't wait to get to Hogwarts. Even if I have no friends, and even though I get bullied, anywhere is better than this place.
