Chapter 1

by: Allrainia
“Wow... I can't believe this is happening!” I silently squealed inside of my head. “A new school, a new city, for crying out loud, a new country!”
Here I, Sarah Michelle Klingan, am attending my first year of college at the University of Manchester in England. Who would've thought a graphic design student from Weatherford, Texas could make in a place like this. I mean from birth, I was always told there is nothing more to life than growing up, getting married, buying a house, having kids, and that’s it. But life is so much stranger than that. It’s so much darker, and so much madder, and so much better.
All these thought were whizzing through my mind as I grabbed the last items from my move. My prized guitar and songbook.
As I headed up the stairs, my mind was elsewhere than how my feet should be maneuvering. I really should have been paying attention, since I'm not the most coordinated human being. My wedge heel caught just right on the top stair, sending me tumbling and sheet music flying.
Once my vision cleared, I was staring face-to-toe with a pair of old worn out sneakers. I followed up their owner's legs to find my reflection in the lens of a video camera. “Need a hand?” I heard a young man's British voice ask. The camera moved to show a very handsome boy with chocolate brown, side swept hair, matching glowing eyes, and a playful smirk.
“A hand would be nice, but so would better behaving feet,” I laughed, accepting his outstretched hand. With a heave, he helped me off of the dormitory floor.
After brushing myself off, the boy left my mind. Right now, I was worried about my precious guitar and music. I hurriedly picked up my music, and was about grab the last sheet, when a familiar hand snatched it up before I could. The boy was back.
“Hey, that’s personal. Personal!” I fake scolded. “Can I please have that back?”
“On two conditions. One – I get a thank-you for helping the poor damsel in distress up, and two – I get your name,” he jeered playfully.
“Okay. Thank-you dear chivalrous knight in shining armor for retrieving my a ss from the unforgiving floor, and the name's Sarah. Sarah Klingan,” I delivered sarcastically and plucked the sheet out of his hand.
“Whoa, she's fiery!” he joshed. “And I’m Daniel Howell, but you can call me Dan.”
“Well, I can't say it was exactly nice meeting you, but it was interesting. I guess I’ll see you around.” And with that I passed Dan and headed toward my dorm room. I hadn’t taken five steps when he called out to me.
“Hey Sarah?” I turned around and raised my eyebrow. “Do you think we could catch a coffee later, like tomorrow night or something?” he nervously inquired.
“Eh, why the h e ll not? You’ll have to pick me up though. I haven’t even been in England a week. Room 34C. See you then!” And I headed my separate direction, leaving Dan pondering my answer.
I couldn't help but smile to myself a little as I walked off…
* * * * * * * * * * * * *
I stood there in a stupor as the auburn-haired, grey-eyed, freckled Sarah walked off. Had she just agreed to go out for coffee with me? That usually never works! And why wasn’t I socially awkward just then? I was so smooth! This is a major breakthrough!
Sleep had a difficult time coming to me that night. I was too excited about tomorrow night. Something about this strange American girl had me perplexed. I couldn’t put my finger on it. I had to know more about her.
