Chapter 4

Scarlette Lupin

Music was suddenly blasting from my alarm clock and I sat up in bed with a jolt.

I yawned and turned off my Muggle alarm clock Mum had gotten me for my birthday this year. Before...no, I wasn't going to think about that.

"Lottie! Are you up?" I heard Dad shout from downstairs.

"Yeah, I'm up!" I yelled back, throwing off my covers and climbing out of bed.

"Hurry up or you'll make your brother, Sirius, Peter, and your friend James miss the train!"

"He's NOT my friend, Dad!" I yelled back, crossing my room and shutting the door.

Why the hell was it open to begin with?

I stopped then and reopened the door, speaking in a sweet sing-song voice. "James, Peter, and Sirius if you aren't out from under my bed in two seconds I'm going to kill you!"

The boys popped out from under the bed: James Potter, Peter Pettigrew, and Sirius Black. The three most annoying 15-year-old boys in this century.

I crossed my arms over my chest and glared at them as they stood there, grinning like the bloody fools that they are.

"Nice pajamas, Lottie." James said, winking at me.

I was wearing a neon-green sports bra and neon-yellow running shors.

"Haha, you're cute." I said sarcastically, still glaring. "Now get the hell out of my room. All of you."

The boys flopped down on my bed, grinning.

"Nah, we're still waiting for the show, love." James waggled his eyebrows at me.

I turned to the door. "Da-ad! James, Peter, and Sirius are in my room trying to see me when I'm changing!"

"Good work boys!" I heard him yell from downstairs.

"Argh, Dad!" I yelled back as the guys laughed.

Remus hurried down the hallway, still yawning and putting his glasses on. "C'mon guys, we talked about this. My sister? Really?"

I glared daggers at the guys. "Unless each of you want a bloody knucklesandwhich, courtesy of me, then I suggest you get the hell out of my room!"

"Language, Lottie!" Dad's amused voice drifted from downstairs.

"Yeah, language, Lottie!" The three boys chimed.

"Shut up, Dad!" I yelled back.

Remus gave me a look and sighed. "Guys, let's go get some breakfast, okay?"

Slowly but surely, and with much complaining, the boys left.

I stood at the door, fuming, until all of them were out of my room before slamming the door shut and locking it.

Damn James. Damn him to hell. I thought before turning towards my dresser to get dressed.

I had a feeling that today was not going to be a good day.

I walked into the kitchen, leaving my trunk, bag, and owl Raven out in the hall.

The boys were all sitting at the table, eating sausage and eggs, as was Regina.

Regina. Damn her to hell too.

While Remus and I were at Hogwarts lest term, Dad apparently kicked Mum out of our house because he "didn't love her anymore".

He "loved" Regina now.

Not that my mum minded all that much. She sent Remus and I each a damn alarm clock for our birthday in March and then we never heard from her again.

Not that she or Dad even thought to tell Remus and I any of this before we came home from Hogwarts to find all of Mum's stuff gone and all of Regina's stuff here.

Because they didn't.

"Good morning, Lottie!" Regina said in an overly perky way.

She's been trying to befriend me the whole damn summer.

Not happening.

"You know, only my friends call me Lottie." I said as I leaned over the table and grabbed a sausage from Sirius's plate.

"Oi!" He yelled, trying to grab it back.

I grinned as I ate the sausage, moving away from the table.

Regina looked hurt and put a hand to her baby bump on her belly.

Yeah. Dad dated her, married her, and got her knocked up in the span of 7 months.

Without telling Remus and I shiit.

"Why are you dressed so nice, Scarlette?" Peter asked timidly.

James rolled his eyes. "For Snivellus, of course."

"Shut up, Potter." I said, turning around to grab a bagel from the counter as my heart squeezed painfully.

I looked up as Dad walked into the kitchen, stopping when he saw me. "Ah, what are you wearing, Scarlette?"

All the skin I was showing was freaking Dad out.

I rolled my eyes and sat on the counter to eat my bagel. "It's this new thing called clothes, Dad."

"I don't like that tone, young lady." Dad said, giving Regina a kiss on the cheek.

"Yeah, well, maybe you should just kick me out on the streets 'cause you "don't love me anymore"." I shook my head and at a bite of bagel.

The kitchen became dead silent.

Dad put a hand to his head and sighed. "Sweetie-"

I shook my head again and stood up. "Don't, Dad. Just don't." I grabbed my bag and threw it over my shoulder. "I'll be in the car.

Then I turned and walked out of the kitchen.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was in the front seat of the car with my sunglasses on when Dad and the guys came out of the house.
"Shotgun!" I heard someone yell.
Then James was climbing in next to me in the front seat as Dad got in on my right side to drive.
James grinned at me as Peter, Sirius, and Remus slid into the backseat. "Hey, Lottie."
Stuck between Dad and Potter?
"Aw, hell." I muttered, slouching in my seat and crossing my arms over my chest.
The silence was deafening as Dad started driving towards King's Cross Station.
"So are you lot excited to get back to Hogwarts?" Dad asked, grinning like everything was perfectly fine.
Remus and Peter nodded as Sirius and James grinned, saying: "We are so ready, Mr. Lupin."
"That's good, boys. Just try not to get into too much trouble." Dad chuckled and then glanced at me. "What about you, Lottie? Aren't you excited to see uh, what's-his-name, uh- Severus! You're excited to see your boyfriend, aren't you?"
I took my sunglasses off and just stared at him.
"What?" Dad asked, glancing at me as he continued driving.
"Hey Dad?" Remus asked from the backseat, sounding exasperated.
"Yeah?"
"Remember the list of stuff I told you not to talk about today? That was one of them."
"Why? What's so wrong with it?" Dad asked, shrugging.
"Dad, don't-"
"No, son. I want to know what is so damn wrong with me trying to talk to my daughter."
I shook my head, half-laughing. "Wow. You amaze me, Dad. Really, you do. Where the hell were you the whole damn summer? Hell, not even that- where were you the last day of school when Remus and I came home from King's Cross and I was in bloody tears because my boyfriend, my best friend since I was 6, had just torn my heart out of my chest and stomped on it until it was in bloody pieces!"
"Oh, sweetie, I'm so sorr-"
I interrupted him, not even caring to hear his insincere apology. "Oh, that's right. You were out gallavanting with your new-found love. You kicked Mum out and boom! You forgot you actually had kids to look after. Two kids that- by the way- had to deal with the full moon- not just once, but twice!- all by ourselves, damn it!"
Dad's mouth was hanging open and I realized he'd just pulled into the King's Cross Staion parking lot.
"Yeah. Nice job at parenting, Dad." I said sarcastically before climbing over a gaping James and hopping out of the car.
I grabbed my trunk, Raven's cage,and my bag and piled it all onto a cart. Then I hurried into King's Cross station, ignoring the shouts from Dad, blinking away tears as I did.
Soon I was weaving my way through the crowds on the Hogwarts platform. I found the compartment where I always meet Lyla, Abriana, and whoever else wants to come.
I tossed my trunk and Raven's cage in, put my bag over my shoulder, and hopped onto the train.
Lyla, Abriana, and Xeno were already there.
"Hey, guys!" I grinned as I put my trunk and Raven's cage in the overhead compartment. Then I plopped down in a seat next to Lyla and across from Abriana and Xeno with a sigh of relief. "Finally, some people who aren't of the annoying male gender!"
Abriana and Lyla laughed as Xeno raised an eyebrow at me. "Should I be feeling insulted, Lottie?"
I grinned and winked at him. "Always, Xeno. Always."
Just then, the compartment door opened and Severus Snape walked in, sitting next to Lyla, as far away from me as possible.
"Shield your eyes!" Xeno cried out teasingly.
When Sev and I had been dating all of last year, we might have been a bit...er...let's just say our public displays of affection were frequent. And long.
Shiit. I thought to myself. I haven't talked to anyone all summer. They don't know.
I steeled myself and met Severus's gaze for a second. "I haven't talked to anyone all summer."
Severus nodded once and then turned to Lyla, beginning to talk to her about something as Xeno and Abriana gave me quizzical looks.
I stood on my seat to root through my trunk for nothing until I knew Snape had left.
I would tell Xeno and Abriana and Lyla later, knowing they were probably confused right now.
I bit my tongue to sotp the tears from coming.
I'd thought I was ready to face him.
The compartment door opened and then slammed shut with enough force to knock me off balance and fall over.
Until someone caught me by the waist.
"Whoa, careful now, Lottie." James smirked at me, keeping his hands on my waist after I was steady again.
The door had opened to let Sirius, Peter, Remus, James, and Lily in, not letting Snape out like I'd hoped. Sirius, Peter, and Remus were already seated next to Xeno and Abriana.
"Get the hell off of me." I spat out, slapping his hands off of my skin.
I turned around and saw Lily glaring at me.
Just before she punched me with enough force to send me flying back into James' arms.
The compartment got really quiet as everyone stopped talking and watched us.
The train started moving with a lurch.
"What the hell, Lily?" I said with my hand to my eye, not even caring James was still holding me up.
"He told me what happened last year, so don't even try denying it, Scarlette." Lily snapped.
"You had better tell me what the hell you're going on about before I punch you." I growled at her.
"You cheated on Sev!" I heard Abriana gasp as Lily continued on relentlessly, not noticing the look on my face. "The three of us have been friends since we were six! Of course he would tell me! How could you, Scarlette?"
I turned to Snape then, narrowing my eyes at him as he refused to look at me. "So that's the lie you're telling Lily? Your best friend? That I broke your heart by cheating on you?" Severus looked up at me and opened his mouth to say something, but I cut him off. "You lying bastard. Why don't you tell your "best friend" Lily the bloody truth, Sev. That you broke my heart into little pieces by saying you never loved me in the first place and that everything you'd ever told me was a Goddamn lie. How about you tell her that, Snivellus."
With that, I broke free from James, grabbed my bag from my seat, and stormed out of the compartment.
