Chapter 1

~^~^~

by: Subrina
I looked around the room, suddenly realizing that I would never see it again. After all, I was in a burning building. The flames licked the curtains as I lay curled in a ball in the corner of the small room. I stared at my hands, bruised and bloody. I had tried to pry the locked door open with my tiny eight-year old hands, but it hadn't really worked. The smoke made me cough and I had a headache. I had stopped crying a while ago, probably because my tears had run out. I had tried opening the window, but that was locked too. I didn't remember locking it. I never locked my windows.

There was a sudden kick on the door and I stood up. With another hard kick, my door came down. My ten-year old brother, Justin, burst into the room. His wide eyes found me and he screamed. "Subrina! Come on, let's go! We have to get out of here!" He said, taking my bloody hand in his and leading me out. We ran down the stairs and were about to reach the front door when I realized something was missing.

"Where's mommy?" I asked my brother. By the way he stared at me, he had no clue. He must have seen the look in my eyes because he took a step towards me.

"Subrina no!" He shouted, but he was too late. I turned around and sprinted through my burning house, screaming into the smoke for my mother. I rounded a corner and rammed into someone. It was a man, dressed in all black, that I didn't recognize. He cursed, then turned around to face me. He smiled and reached out his hand.

"Hello there little girly." He laughed. I screamed and someone tackled him. My mother. She landed on top of him and took something out of his hand. A gun. She through it to the ground and punched the guy endless times in the face. He lay still, groaning. My mother looked up at me.

"Subrina, baby, come on!" She screamed, scooping my up in her arms. Her wild black hair flew out behind her as we found my brother and ran outside. All of our eyes were red and puffy from the smoke. My mother ran as fast as she could while holding me. She was limping.

"Mommy, why are you limping?" I asked her. She winced.

"I just hurt my leg sweetie." She said, urging Justin to keep running. We were almost at then edge of our property.

"Mommy, who was that man?" I asked. A gunshot rippled through the air before she could answer. My mother screamed and tripped, literally throwing me as she fell. I landed on my arm, which sent a wave of pain to my brain. Justin had stopped running and was frozen, staring at my mother. I looked back at her. She was on the ground, clutching her shoulder. Red blood oozed freely from between her fingers. Had she been shot?

"Lily!" She screamed into the night air as loud as she could. Lily? Who was that? Before I could even think what my mother had meant, a woman burst through the woods bordering our house. She had long, light brown hair and hazel eyes. She ran over to my mom. There were tears in my eyes.

"Samantha, is there anything I can do?" She asked, talking to my mom. I looked at the strange woman. She looked like a nice lady. My mom shook her head, wincing.

"Just... take my kids. Take them... away. Don't... let them..." My mother winced again. "Don't let them find you." She finished. Lily nodded once and walked over to me.

"Are you hurt?" She asked. I ignored her and ran to my mother, crying. She smiled up at me and kissed my hand.

"Go sweetie. Go with Aunt Lily." She said. My mother handed Lily a note. Lily nodded and picked me up. I was kicking and screaming, wanting to stay with my mom. Justin was awe-struck by all of this, and he hadn't moved yet. His body was limp and his piercing green eyes looked so... dead.

"Mom?" He murmured, almost to himself. Lily grabbed his hand and started to walk into the forest, still holding me. I screamed for my mother. She smiled from where she lay.

"I love you! I promise this isn't the end!" She screamed after me. Tears erupted from within me as I saw a man in black walk out of the smoke.

"Mom!" I screamed again. Lily cried silent tears. Justin walked ahead, eyes glassy and not focused on anything. The last thing I saw was my mother, turned over, bloody, and staring up at the sky.
