Chapter 4

Every Mushroom Cloud has a Silver Lining

Boring. That's the basic word that describes life in the boat. Everyone's always busy with something. I decided to pester Zuko for a change. I walked into his room without knocking and leaned on the door as it closed.

"The only reason you should be interupting me is if you have news of the Avatar." I rolled my eyes.

"Fine. Leave your best friend to die of boredom then," I walked out as Iroh was just walking in. "Good luck. Only wants to know about the Avatar."

I walked out and wasn't that far down the hall when light blazed from where the two were. I looked back, thinking if I should go back and check or not. After a few minutes passed I decided to. Poking my head in first, as to not scare Zuko, and walked in. "Knock, knock, can I come in- Oh, too late," I looked down at Zuko working at a map frustratingly. I glanced at Iroh then slipped my arms around Zuko's neck in a friendly hug. "Zu-Zu, why are you always working?"

"I need to if we're ever going home."

"I don't wanna go home. I thought we've been through this!" I tightened my grip.

"Well I do," He forced my arms away. "Besides, I thought you said ship life was boring?!"

"I said being stuck with nothing to do is boring! The Fire Nation has nothing for me! Nothing for you, too. You just don't realize it!" I stormed out, angry at him, again.

Zuko POV

"Why does she do this to me?!" I groaned, hitting the ground with a thud as I went back to work.

"You mean care for you?"

"Aggravate me!" I said through clenched teeth. "One minute she's happy as can be, then all of a sudden we're fighting again!"

"Did you ever stop to think it might not only be her, but you?"

"What?!" I slammed my fist on the table and glared at Uncle.

"You're so closed up nowadays. Why don't you try opening up to her. Tell her your true feelings." My face felt warm.

"What feelings?!"

"You can't fool me, Zuko. It's apparent in the way you look at her, when you're not fighting. The way you two talk to each other, fight with each other, interact with each other. Just know that she loves you, too. Although whether it be as a best friend or a lover, I'm not too sure of yet," Iroh started walking out. "Just make sure you don't lose her. Girls like that aren't too easy to come by."

I glared after him as he left. As soon as he closed the door I let out a breath of annoyance. Who ever said I loved her? I'm in love with Mai... Right? Of course right!

Lani POV

"Stupid Zuko," I sniffed, glaring at the painting of us. "Why do we have to fight?"

"Lani? It's dinner." I heard from outside my door. I wiped my eyes and looked at my door.

"I'm not coming."

"What?! You have to!"

"Try make me!"

"Augh! You will come to dinner or-"

"Or what, Zuko? What will you do? Leave me to fend for myself in the Earth Kingdom? I won't mind. I can manage." Then another voice was heard. I could just barely make out who it was, Iroh.

"Be gentle."

"Will you please come to dinner...?" Zuko said reluctantly.

"Fine! Starve!" I heard him storm away and fell into my pillow face first, sobbing. That's all we do these days. Is fight. I ended up crying myself to sleep. I woke up to a knock on my door, assuming it was Zuko I yelled. "Go away!"

"It's me."

"Oh, Kuma," I got up. "Come in."

She came in with tea and set it down on the bed. "Are you alright, dear?"

"Uh, yeah," I sighed.

"Good, because I have some... News."

"Zuko found the Avatar on Kyoshi Island. He's left to bring him back."

"Oh great," I rolled my eyes and took a cup of tea. "We know how that's gonna turn out."

"He tries, he really does. He just wants the best for you." Kuma sighed.

"No, he wants what's best for him. I don't want to go back. He does. He wants to go back to save his honour or some sh|t like that! I want to explore," I slammed my empty tea cup down.

Kuma stood up, grabbing the tea tray and putting my empty cup on it. "He means well... Try getting him to open up. I promise things will get better... And even if they don't... Every mushroom cloud has a silver lining." She walked out and I groaned, lying back on my bed.

"What does that even mean?!" I thought about it. "Well... A mushroom cloud happens when an explosion happens... A silver lining is something good... So even a disaster has something good in it... Hopefully that's true."
