Chapter 1

A puzzle is still unsolved if a piece is missing

Hermione and I walked to the Gryffindor table and sat down between Neville and Harry. Everybody was really nervous about our flying lesson today, I even saw Seamous biting his nails - even though he talked a hundred times about his flying adventures.
The second we sat down, Hermione pulled out the 'Quidditch Through The Ages' I gave her last night, and started repeating flying tips from it. Ron sneered and rolled his eyes, but Neville leaned closer so he can listen to her carefully, asking her to explain him some stuff. It was an amusing scene and even though I was terrified too, Harry and I chuckled looking at the three of them.
I turned to look at the Slytherin table, right when the first mail arrived. Draco caught my look and smiled before opening his mail, a not so small box of candy.
I turned back, now little less nervous, and saw Severus walking out of the Grand Hall, talking to our DADA proffesor.
-"Where are you going?" Harry asked me confused when he saw I was getting up.
"I have to ask Severus something, wanna come with?"
He shook his head as 'no'. "I don't need it this morning, I feel nosiea enough."
I chuckled and ran out of the hall, catching with a corner of my eye a small
package hitting Neville's head. I just hope he comes out of our flying lesson alive.

When I came to the Entrance Hall it was empty, everybody must've been in the Great Hall for breakfast.
"L-l-eave me. I d-don't know what are you t-ta-talking about, Severus."
I slowly walked to where the voice was coming from. Severus was standing opposite from professor Quirrel, who looked a bit scared.
"Um, excuse me, professors?"
Quirrel twitched a little, he probably didn't hear me coming. I looked at Severus, but he wasn't looking at me - he was fixing professor Quirrel with a cold glare that used to gave me chills.
Quirell ignored him, and looked at me. I don't think I said anything to him before.
"M-miss Katt, isn't it?" I nodded "You are a g-gr-great student in my c-class."
I smiled politely "Thank you, sir."
His eyes shrank and he spoked with a voice which I didn't think it was his - till I remembered we were the only ones here.
"I have a feeling you're going to be a part of some great and powerful things."
I opened my mouth but didn't know what to say. Quirell turned back to Snape and said with his normal, jittery voice:
"Don't y-yo-you agree, Severus?"
Severus grabbed my hand "Let's go, Joan." and pulled me so I had to follow him. I turned back to look, but professor Quirrel already left.
"Severus?" He stopped and turned back to me. "Are you okay?" I asked, he seemed really angry.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Just... please, avoid talking to Quirell when you're alone. He's
hiding something, Cat. I don't like it."
He really didn't like this guy "Okay, Sev, don't worry."
He gnashed his teeth "Don't call me Sev, you know I hate it."
I started laughing and he chuckled a bit -"You need to go, Joan, your class is starting in five minutes." I couldn't talk from laughing but I nodded and headed up the stairs.

I couldn't stop thinking about the words professor Quirell told me... what did he
mean by that?
I passed by a couple of ghosts gossiping when I realized they were the only ones here. Something's wrong. I looked around - where the heck am I?
I know I got on the third floor, and turned left... or did I went right? I was so occupied with what Quirell said I didn't really pay attention to where was I going.
I headed down the hall I was in - this must be the Third floor corridor, I remembered.
Great. If Filch catches me, McGonagally will take more points from Gryffindor, twenty at least.
I stopped when I heard a sound behind the door on the right. It sounded like chains hitting a wall or something. I walked towards it and slowly put my ear on it, but I couldn't hear a thing. Suddenly, something started breathing heavily and the sounds of chains started again. What the heck is in there?
What's the spell for opening doors? I know Hermione told me once...
It's A-something... Wait, what?
I turned and I felt my heart stop.

Filch's cat, Miss Norris was standing there with her glossy eyes staring at me. I sighed - if she goes to get him I'm really busted. I should start carrying cat food or something when I go exploring the castle. If I don't get kicked out of it after this.
Well, desperate times call for desperate measures, I thought -"Here kitty, kitty..."
I don't remember if I was ever more surprised - Miss Norris actually came towards me and started rubbing on my feet, purring. I bent down and petted her on the head as her purring got louder. Okay, this is creepy.
I picked her up and headed back to where I came from "Good girl..." When I was at the end of the stairs I put her down "Go, go to Mr Filch." She meowed one more time and quickly ran down the stairs. I bet Fred and George wont believe me when I tell them about this.

At three-thirty, we were all walking towards the lawn before the Forbidden forest, to our first flying lesson. I grabbed Hermione's hand, she was shaking.
"Ease up, Mione." I smiled to her trying to calm her down, trying to calm my self down.
The Slytherins were already there, and my eyes instantly looked for Draco. He was standing next to a girl with jet black hair, and waved when he saw me. I smiled and waved back ignoring eye rolls from Harry and Ron.
A witch with almost white hair and goggles walked towards us. She must be
Madam Hooch, our flying professor.
"Well, what are you all waiting for?" she barked. "Everyone stand by a broomstick. Come on, hurry up."
I looked down to my broomstick - it was tied up with spello-tape so it doesn't fall a part. I exchanged looks with Harry who was next to me - his broom didn't look much better.
"Stick out your right hand over your broom," called Madam Hooch at the front, "and say 'Up!"' "UP" we all shouted.
I had to move a step back so it doesn't hit me, but I managed to grab it somehow. I glanced over to others - Harry was holding his tightly, Hermione was chasing hers as it rolled away and Lavander was simply glaring at the broomstick next to her, not moving at all.
Madam Hooch then showed us how to mount our brooms without sliding off the end, and walked up and down the rows correcting our grips. Harry and Ron had huge grins after she told Draco he'd been doing it wrong for years, Seamus and Dean chuckled.
"Now, when I blow my whistle, you kick off from the ground, hard," said Madam Hooch. "Keep your brooms steady, rise a few feet, and then come straight back down by leaning forward slightly. On my whistle -- three -- two --"
But before she finished counting, Neville pushed off the ground and headed up on his broomstick.
"Come back, boy!" I heard professor shout, but Neville kept raising up quickly. His face was almost green and the broomstick was shaking under his hands.
"Just...don't fall." I whispered under my breath. He was now about thirty feet above the ground.
His broom suddenly twitched left, then right and he hit a wall. Next second, he was on the ground, lying face down.
Madam Hooch ran towards him and all of us followed her. She bended over Neville, her face as white as his. "Broken wrist," she muttered. "Come on, boy -- it's all right..." She turned and gestured me to come closer "Put one your arm around this girl, and another around me, okay?" Neville nodded and did as she said. She then turned to the rest of the class,
"None of you is to move while we take this boy to the hospital wing! You leave those brooms where they are or you'll be out of Hogwarts before you can say 'Quidditch.' Come on, dear." She said and we slowly headed towards the castle.
Poor Neville, I just hope he's not really hurt.
We put him in one of the beds and he layed down, when Madam Pomfrey came holding a goblet with something green in it.
"What happened, dear?" She asked Neville, putting down the goblet.
- "I f-fell down."
"You can go back now, miss. I'll come when I make sure Mr Longbottom is
alright." Madam Hooch said to me.
"Sure, professor. Um, Madam Pomfrey?"
"Yes, dear?" she looked at me with her brown eyes.
"Did you let Fred Weasley go? You said he'll be alright by the end of the week..."
"Yes, his brother came to help him, they left just minutes before you came. I told him he should rest next couple of days."
I smiled, feeling better now "Thank you, Madam." I looked at Neville one more time - except of the trauma, he was okay. I left the Hospital wing and headed to the quidditch court.

Wait, what is Harry doing with Professor McGonnagalli?
"Ms Katt, what are you doing here?" she asked me with her strict voice. I glanced over to Harry, he looked a bit scared.
"I was helping Madam Hooch to take Neville to the Medical wing. Are you okay, Harry?"
He opened his mouth to say something but McGonagalli cut him.
"He's fine. You should be getting back, Ms Katt."
I looked at Harry but he seemed confused as I was.
"Um, ofcourse, professor..." I muttered and continued down the stares.
Why did she took Harry from the class? Did he get in trouble or something? I sighed knowing that I have to wait till tonight for the answer.
I looked at the Clock Tower that showed it was five minutes till the end of the class. There's no point in getting back down on the yard now, I better go check how's Fred, I thought and turned back.

The Common room was empty, they must be in their room. I went up the stairs and knocked on their door
"Are you decent?"
I asked just for fun and walked in before they answered.
- "Fred!"
I ran up to him and tackled him down on the bed. He started laughing and hugged me back, "Are you trying to get me back in the Hospital wing?"
George made a face "What, no hugs for me?" he said with a baby voice.
"No." I said just to see his face and stood up to tackle him too.
When we all finished down on the floor, Fred started,
"Okay, guys, I have some amazing ideas for pranks! I thought we could... what?"
He stopped when he saw George's and mine faces and we laughed "You got out ten minutes ago and you'll already planing a prank." I said trough a laugh. George hit him with a pillow.
"It's good to have you back, bro."

Fred, George and I stayed in their room working on a plan to prank Filch till ten in the evening. Lee was helping us at first, but when Angelina came to talk to him about something, he left, saying 'he'll be back in a minute'.
It was two hours ago. I chuckled remembering how he drooled every time she walked by. Who knows what they're doing by now.
I walked down to the Common and sat on the couch next to Hermione
"What'ya reading, Mione?"
She looked up at me and smiled "Magical Draughts and Potions', Snape mentioned it in one of the classes so I thought it'll be good to read it... You might enjoy it too, I know you like potions and stuff like that."
"Yeah, I'll take a look when you finish... Um, have you seen Harry?"
"No, not since McGonagalli took him to the castle... He's probably in his room, packing."
"Packing? For what?"
"Well, Madam Hooch clearly said that anyone who tries to fly will be expelled. I told him, but he..."
"Wait, what?! He's expelled?!"
I was running to his room before she could answer.

I said and stopped on the door when I saw him and Ron laughing and all of his stuff was where it was before. They stopped laughing when they heard me. "Joan? What's wrong?" Harry asked me confused.
I glanced again at each of them "Um... aren't you expelled?"
Harry and Ron exchanged looks and started laughing again. What is going on here??
"Will someone please explain me what is going on, cause I'm sure not getting it." I said sitting down, now getting a bit anoyed. Harry nodded, still laughing a bit, and started telling me what happened.
When he finished the part about Malfoy, I didn't know what to think. I mean, Draco was always good to me, always. Why would he act like that today then? Is he actually not like I think he is? My mind was filled with questions, questions I didn't want to share with Harry and Ron, at least not right now.
"So, what happened after McGonagalli took you to the castle?" I said after a minute of silence. He glanced over at Ron but continued.
We stayed up talking till about eleven-thirty. I can't believe he got in our quidditch team, that's amazing! I wish I saw him flying, but he said he'd ask Oliver if Ron and I can come to his first practice.
I started yawning so I wished them good night and headed up to my room. Hermione was sitting on her bed, writing something in her notebook. She looked up when I came in and put her finger on her lips.
"Shh, Lavander's sleeping. What did Harry say?"
I sat next to her and told her about him getting in our team. When she realized he's not expelled a big smile came up and I realized she was only acting today like she doesn't care. She's a really good friend, too bad Ron and Harry don't see it.
I was too tired so I went to bed right away, falling sleep the second I laid my head down on the pillow.
