Chapter 2

Gift from Artemis

I woke up the next morning and got Lucy and myself ready for school. For breakfast we had strawberries, bananas, and an orange.
"Did you set the cats out?" I asked her as we were about to leave. Lucy's eyes got big and she ran to get the cats. She came back with an armful of two full grown cats, one was black with dark eyes, the other was white with icy blue eyes. I opened the door for us and closed the door as she set the cats down.
They looked up at us and meowed.
"Aw," Lucy said. I patted them on the head and grabbed Lucy's hand as the bus came pulling up and picked us up.
The elementary school, the middle school, and high school share buses since the schools are small enough and close by.
The high school came into view and I kissed Lucy on the forehead.
"Have a good day," I told her before I got up.
"I will," she said as I got off.
I went to the office to see if the track and field sign up sheet was up yet.
As I opened the door I ran into a boy.
"Oh. Uh hello,"
"Hello," he said.
"I- yeah... excuse me," I said.
"Oh, sorry, he said, with a shy laugh and got out of my way.
"It's okay," I said with a smile and saw the sign up sheet, I pulled out a green ink pen and signed my name.
"Track, huh," I heard a voice. I looked up and saw the boy.
"Yeah," I gave him a polite smile.
"I signed up too," he said and pointed at his name.
"Artemio," I read aloud, "I like your name,"
"Thanks. You'll probably get a kick out of my last name though," he said with a smile.
"What is it?"
"Artemios," He said. I laughed.
"I'm sorry, I didn't mean to laugh,"
"It's okay," he said, "so you know my name but, I don't know your's,"
"Oh, sorry. My name is Melika Jones," I said and we shook hands.
"Well it's very nice to meet you,"
"Yeah. So just guessing but, you're new, right?" I asked.
"Yeah, I'm a Sophomore,"
"Really? Me too," I said as I walked with him, "would you like me to show you around?" I asked.
"Yeah, that'd be cool,"
"Alright than," I said as I took his schedule to see which classes I should show him first, "hey we got all the same classes," I said with a smile.
"That's cool," he said.
"Aye Mel! Wait up!" Some one called after us. We turned around and saw a boy come running towards us. I smiled at him.
"Hey what's up Triton?"
"Nothing much, just signed up for baseball," he said and looked at Artemio, "hi, I'm Triton Atlantic," they shook hands.
"I'm Artemio Artemios,"
"Nice to meet you,"
"You too,"
"Yeah, Triton is my fishing buddy," I said with a smile.
"Every Sunday," Triton said.
"That's cool," Artemiosaid, "I prefer hunting,"
"Really? Well maybe you could come hunt with me," I said, "of course that's only if you use bows and arrows instead of guns," I had a huge dislike for guns.
"Of course. I dont like guns much," he said.
"Really? Me too,"
We walked around campus showing Artemio around.
"So how did you get stuck with the name Artemio Artemios?" Triton asked.
"Well my family has always worshipped the old Greek Gods, especially Artemis, so my last name means 'Worships Artemis or something a long those lines. Now my parents have wanted a child for a long time but, never could concieve until they finally sacrificed a stag they had hunted for her. Next thing you know I was being born, my parents saw my birth as a gift from Artemis and named me Artemio. Meaning 'a gift from Artemis,'"
"Weak," Trion said, I elbowed him in the gut.
"That's really cool," I said, with this whole Artemis talk, it reminded me of last night. I still couldn't believe Apollo was really in my kitchen, I would have thought it all a dream if I hadn't seen the bow and arrow on the desk in my room.
The bell rang and it was time to head to World History.
I sat down in my usual spot and looked at the teacher's desk. Artemio was talking Mr. Yuh.
I watched Artemio with much interest. Was it just by luck that someone who believed in the Greek Gods would move here after I had an encounter with Apollo? I highly doubted luck had anything to do with it. More like fate... or Fates.
"Alright class, we have a new student. This is Artemio Artemios, and I'll let him talk abot himself," Mr. Yuh said as he sat down. Artemios strode to the front of the room and began talking.
"My name is Artemios, I moved here from New York. Every summer my family goes to our summer home in Delos. And that's about it," he said with a shrug. He sat down in the seat next to me.
"Alright class, for this semester we will be learning about World War 2," Mr. Yuh said. I was pretty excited, I liked history, I don't know why, I just do.
The class went fast and mext was art class, another favorite class. We painted and I did a war scene. The teacher, Mrs. Hamm was pleased with it and called it one of my best works.
"It reminds me of the Trojan War," Artemio said when he saw it.
"Really?"
"Yeah, big waves would be the handiwork of Poseidon, the thunderclouds could be from Zeus, the flames erupting from the middle of the crevice in the ground could be sent from Hades," and Artemios began painting a story behind my painting. It was pretty fun as I joined in, sharing my knowledge of Greek mythology.
The day went pretty well until the last period of the day when I got a phone call.
"Melika, it's for you," Mr. Flocks. I took the class room phone from him and. Held it up to the side of my face.
"Hello?"
"I'm so sorry," cried a woman's voice, I recognized it as Ms. Kemp, Lucy's teacher.
"What do you mean?"
"You're sister was kidnapped," she said.
"What? Is this some sick joke?" I asked as my stomach lurched.
"No, it was during recess, some man had sneaked onto the playground and stole her," I had a hand over my mouth as tears fell down my face. This couldn't be happening. Not to me. Not Lucy.
"The police will be stopping by some time later to talk to you," she said.
"Okay," was all I could manage to say before I hung up and sat back down in my seat.
"Are you okay Melika?" I heard Mr. Flocks ask. I shook my head no, "do you want to talk about it?" I was thankful I was in this class, it was small and we were actually pretty cool with one another.
"My sister was just kidnapped," I whispered. I knew every one heard because the room was filled with silence as people strained their ears trying to hear what I say. I stood up, grabbed my things and left. I walked home and it started to rain halfway home. When I made it go my house, everything seemed to remind me of Lucy. My poor sweet Lucy.
I laid down on the couch and waited for the police. Then I remebered I should call Uncle. I pulled out my phone and dialed his number. It rang but he didn't pick up.
"Hey uncle, we need to talk. It's super nimportant. Lucy is missing, kidnapped. Be," I hung up and closed my eyes.
I began to dream.
"You must begin youe journey soon," Apollo told me, he looked like he had when he had visited me in the kitchen.
"We have given you what we could to help you on this journey," a woman said, it was Artemis, "learn what you must and begin you're first step on this adventure," she said as everything went dim and soon pitch black.
