Chapter 11

Pain in Pairs

A.N. I'm sorry I've been dropping the ball a lot lately in my writing. GAH. But I'm writing again! :D Now, on with the show. Also, not sure how many of you saw the little slip in the last chapter... Ludo was actually a part of the Wasps. @_@

Adrianna didn't hear about Emmy until dinner the next evening. It wasn't even one of the professors who told her. It was Tom, who'd skipped class to sit with her. She sat at the Ravenclaw table, eyes staring blankly ahead as she forced herself to eat slowly. Suddenly, there he was, grabbing ahold of her arm and dragging her from the Great Hall.

"Where have you been?" he hissed in her ear as he released her and turned her to face him.

She blinked up at him. "What?"

His eyes flashed with anger. "I know you've been having a hard time of it since your dad died, but come on, Adri. She's your sister and you haven't even gone to see her."

Adrianna's brow furrowed. "What do you mean?"

His eyes widened then. "You don't know?"

"Know what, Thomas?"

"Emmy's in the hospital wing--"

She didn't wait for him to finish speaking, taking off at a run to make it to her sister's side.

Ludo sat beside Emmy's cot, head in his hands. He heard the sound of running, but didn't look up. It wasn't until he heard a broken sob that he pulled himself together to see who was there.

"Adri..." he breathed.

She didn't speak, staring at her sister, hand over her mouth as tears streamed down her face. He could tell it took a lot of strength for her to not sink to her knees and sob. He stood and walked over to her, wrapping an arm around her shoulders. Instinctively, she hid her face in his robes as she allowed her frustration, anger, sadness, and confusion out in the form of tears.

He simply held her, knowing she needed to be close to someone who cared about her deeply. Slowly, the sobs became hiccoughs. He rubbed her back gently, whispering nonsense to comfort her.

After a bit, she looked up at him. "Ludo... Can we talk?"

He nodded and pulled her out into the corridor. Neither of them saw Tom enter the hospital wing and sit in the seat Ludo had abandoned. They stared at each other in silence for a moment before Adri got the nerve to speak.

"I was lying... the other day," she whispered.

"I know. I know I've been dropping the ball a lot, Adri. I'm so sorry... I should have been here for you." His voice was quiet, filled with remorse.

She nodded and stepped closer to him, wrapping her arms around his narrow waist. "I've missed you, Ludo. I've missed how we used to be."

He laughed quietly, hugging her tightly. "There's only one thing I wish I could have done before I left."

She frowned. "What's that?"

"This..." He leaned down and kissed her.

Her eyes went wide before fluttering shut. She went up on her toes to kiss him back. She swore she saw fireworks and her heart pounded.

He was the one to break the kiss. Grinning, he picked her up, holding her close. "Thank you..."

She frowned. "For what?"

"For letting me be your first kiss."

She laughed and kissed him quickly. "You're the only one I considered ever letting kiss me."

Tom heard the laughter from the corridor and knew that Bagman had finally gotten up the nerve to kiss Adrianna. About time... he thought, staring down at Emmaline. He was happy for them. He really was. However, he felt jealous, wondering if he'd ever get a chance at something like that.

"Why couldn't you have been more careful, Emmy?" he whispered. "Don't you know that I care? That I hate seeing you like this. And why Potter? He doesn't see it. He doesn't notice how you look at him. It's the same look he gives to Evans. It's the same way I look at you and you don't even notice..."

Emmy stirred slightly and he wondered if she could hear him. After a moment of silence, she was still again. Tears stung his eyes.

"Why can't you see that I love you, Emmy? Why can't you see that Potter won't ever care about you like I do? No... there will always be blokes like Potter. They'll always be the reason blokes like me come in second." He sighed. "I just want you happy. It doesn't matter if it's with me in the end. You deserve to be happy..."

He felt a hand on his shoulder and looked up to see Ludo and Adri standing behind him. Adri's eyes were filled with sympathy.

"She deserves you. I just hope she sees it," she whispered, kissing his cheek.

Tom shrugged. "I doubt I'll ever be in the running. Potter's got a hold on her heart." He looked at Bagman. "You take care of her."

Ludo nodded. Suddenly there was a noise from the bed.

"About time," Emmy muttered, sitting up. She glanced between Tom, Adrianna, and Ludo. "So... who is it that deserves MacDougal?"
