Prince Of The Fire Nation —— And Possibly My Heart (A Zuko Love Story)
Since I find Zuko, from Avatar: The Last Airbender, extremely amazing and just the definition of an inspirational person (;u;), I decided to write a love story with him! ^^
I hope you enjoy[ed] this story! I think it's probably one of my best.
As of 7/5/12, I have edited and tweaked the story to my liking. :)
"Damn it... it's so cold in here," I heard someone whisper. I looked to my right to see a boy around my age. He had black hair, and his skin was burned around his left eye. It was Prince Zuko.
"Yes, I'm Prince Zuko. Don't bother me," he said. Well this is going to be fun, I thought and felt his eyes on me. "Who are you?"
"I thought you said not to bother you...?" I pointed out with a smirk. He stood up.
"You're lucky I can't Firebend right now, or else you'd be toast," he warned.
"Ooh, I'm scared." He walked over to me, his golden eyes flickering all over me, and he leaned down, his hands on either side of my face.
"Now tell me, who are you?!" he was getting impatient.
"I dunno, who am I?"
"Damn it... you little..."
"If it pleases you, your highness, I'm Arabelle and I'm from the Southern Water Tribe. There, happy? Now, if you'll excuse me."
"Don't come back until you have the Avatar!" Zuko and I were thrown out of the wagon, onto the dirt road near Ba Sing Se. I grunted as I stood up, brushing off my blue robes. Zuko also brushed himself off, and we stood there, watching the wagon disappear.
"They could've at least gave us water," I said to the 'Prince'.
"That's the Fire Nation for you," he replied, and began walking in the direction of a building I could barely make out.
"Do you have any water?" I asked Zuko.
"Does it look like I do?" I sighed and knew I had to Waterbend.
"Zuko, come here," I spotted a small puddle and walked over to it.
"I'm not drinking from a puddle! Are you insane?!" I began to bend the water, and had Zuko open my water bottle and I slithered the water into the bottle. "You're... a Waterbender?"
"There are a lot of things you don't know about me," I replied, a smug look on my face, "Now cup your hands together." Zuko did as I said, and I bended water into his hands. He gladly drank it, and I drank some of mine. It was refreshing, and, as usual, I didn't a get a thank you from Zuko. I just blew it off, knowing it was a male thing.
"How old are you anyway?" he asked me.
"Oh. You look older."
"How old are you?"
"I see." We were approaching the city of Ba Sing Se. "Now, when we get in there, act casual — and no firebending."
"As long as you don't waterbend."
"Fine. Die of thrist. See if I care," I said, and quickened my pace.
"Fine. Just don't let anyone see you. The Fire Nation will kill you if they see you waterbending," he placed some gold coins in my hand. "Here, go buy some food for us. Just don't say anything stupid, okay? I have a life, y'know."
"Okay. Just as long as you don't say anything stupid," I grinned, and walked into the city, giving the Earth Benders a small smile as they let me pass. However, they didn't let Zuko pass. Zuko was furious, and looked like he was about to attack.
"Sir! Please let my friend through, we are only stopping for supplies." One of the guards thought for a moment, before letting Zuko past. "Thank you!" I smiled, and dragged Zuko by his arm. "Be here at sun high, okay?"
"Hmm... I think I got it," a playful smirk on his lips. I rolled my eyes and walked off, only to hear two people screaming.
"Katara! Katara!" I heard two boys calling. One of them was a short boy, and he had this big blue arrow down his forhead. The other, was taller and much more good looking.
"Excuse me, have you seen a girl with dark brown hair and blue eyes around here? She's wearing blue robes, like yours," the short boy asked me. I shook my head.
"Sorry, I haven't. Wait... are you the Avatar?" I asked, recognizing the sign on his forhead finally. He looked around, to check if anyone was listening.
"Yes, I am... I'm Aang," he smiled, and held out his hand. I shook it, smiling weakly.
"Thanks," I turned to the taller boy. "I'm being so rude! I'm Arabe--"
"I heard. Sokka at your service," he said, a wide grin on his face. He lifted my hand to his lips, and I let out a giggle. Aang rolled his eyes.
"Anyway, what brings you here?" I asked them.
"We're kinda running from the Fire Nation," Sokka explained. "Mostly Prince Zuko," he added. I stiffened. Zuko was around here somewhere, and if he saw Aang — oh God, who knows what he'd do.
"What about you?" Aang asked.
"I'm kinda just traveling — with a friend. He has a mission of his own," I laughed. "And I'm looking for my mother, she went missing a month ago."
"Oh... I'm so sorry," Aang said, his expression softening.
"It's okay. Really," I looked up at the sun and saw it was almost in the middle of the day. "I have to go now," I said to them.
"Oh... well, if you ever need any help, just call us. We're going to be here for a few more days, then we're going to the Western Air Temple."
"Okay, well, see ya around!" I waved and headed to a stall where a man was selling food.
"Well, hello there Miss. How can I help you?" he asked. I told him what I needed, and he gave me everything I needed for free.
"Oh I can't —"
"No, please. Lovely food for a lovely girl." I smiled.
"Thank you so much!" I replied, and began walking around.
"Excuse me, miss!" I heard a woman call. My head jerked in her direction, and I saw an older woman holding a small cat-looking creature. "Please... take good care of her..." she shoved the small kitten into my hands and walked away quickly, sobbing loudly.
"Ma'am, I can't —" But she was already gone. I sighed and looked at the kitten. It had big baby blue eyes and short brown fur, and it eyes were shaped like slits.
"There you are!" I heard a certain male's voice. I turned around, to see an angry Zuko. "Where were — what is that?" he pointed to the creature in my hands.
"I don't really know..."
"Oh my God... you are so unbelieveable sometimes Arabelle..." he muttered to himself. I rolled my eyes and cuddled the little kitten into my chest. "You aren't actually thinking if keeping it, are you?" he asked. "Because if you are, it's your —"
"First of all, we are keeping it. Second, it's a girl. And third, her name is Aida."
"Why can't we just leave it here?" I slapped his head, and he let out an 'ow!'.
"Hey! What was that for?" he rubbed his head.
"Animal cruelty," I said, and headed towards the library.
"Now where are you going?"
"To the library. Are you coming?" I asked, opening the door. He groaned as he entered the library.
"I hate books..." I just ignored him, and ran my fingers along the spine of books, looking for a certain one. Aha! Here it is! I picked the book up and sat on one of the chairs, and flipped through the pages. I found a picture of what looked like Aida — she was a Pygmy Puma.
"Aida is a Pygmy Puma," I announced, nudging Zuko. He was leaning forward, one arm propping his head up, the other rested on his leg.
"Fascinating!" he mumbled, pure sarcasm in his voice.
"At least pretend you're interested, she's our responsibility now."
"Woah woah woah... did you say our? No way in hell am I taking care of that beast!" he pointed to Aida, who was sleeping soundly in my bag.
"She isn't a beast. Seems as though she will be though," I informed the annoying turd sitting next to me, my index finger running along the page. "It says here Pymgy Pumas 'can be quite ferocious; and their sharp claws and teeth will do some serious damage. At other times, Pygmy Pumas seem to be quite affectionate.'"
"Sounds like an amazing pet," he replied, looking at me.
"You'll end up loving her in the end, believe me."
"Oh, I believe you," he used sarcasm again.
"Let's go," I tell him and walk out of the library, carrying a sleeping puma.
"It's getting dark. Where are we supposed to sleep?" I asked him. He looked up and around, and his eyes stared at the small building in front of us.
"Here," he lifted himself off the ground, stepping on crates, stacked on each other. He helped me up, one after the other, and we were standing on the flat roof of a house.
"Zuko, are you sure this a good IDEA?!" I raised my voice at the end because my body started falling backwards, but I felt Zuko's arms grab my waist. My heart was pounding madly, and I felt lucky to be alive. "Oh my... thanks so much Zuko."
"That's two you owe me," he smirked, while setting up the blankets he had stolen. Just for the record, I was totally against that, but hey, we needed to survive too!
"What do you mean two?"
"When I saved you from that firebender, and what just happened," he replied, laying on the blanket, leaving little space for me.
"You got it all wrong. That firebender wasn't attacking me, he was talking to me."
"But he was also hitting on you," he turned on his back, closing his eyes.
"And what's it to you?"
"Just go to bed, I'm tired and we have a lot to do tomorrow."
"What are we doing?"
"We're going to capture the Avatar."
"And how do you know where he is?"
"I saw you talking to him today."
"You little stalker!" I spazzed, kicking his side. He sat up, clutching his side.
"Geesh woman! I'm a human being too!" he said, looking at me, our eyes locking.
"Yeah, sure you are."
"What are you getting at?"
"How can you be a human being if you're trying to kill someone?"
"I have to."
"No one has to kill anyone, you just chose whether or not to," I pointed out, laying next to him, facing away from him.
"Whatever, blondie. Think what you want," and with that, it grew quiet. And I slowly drifted off to sleep, finally glad to rest.
"Stupid cat..." I heard someone mutter. I blinked a few times before turning over and saw Zuko trying to get his shoe back from Aida. Aida was growling and biting Zuko's shoe with all of her might, and Zuko was trying to be as nice as possible while trying to rescue his shoe.
"Zuko, what are you doing?" I asked, sitting up.
"Rescuing my shoe!" he replied, and pulled back, and he flew backwards, landing on his butt. Aida still had a piece of his shoe in her mouth, and she ran around on the roof top, her tail flicking everywhere.
"Can I kill her?" Zuko asked.
"Hey, Arabelle!" I heard a voice that I faintly recognized. I looked up to see Aang, Sokka, and this other girl.
"Oh crap..." I glanced at Zuko who pulled his hood over his head, obviously trying to disguise himself. "Hey Aang," I smiled faintly, as he got off a Sky Bison. The Bison roared.
"Katara, this is Arabelle." Aang introduced us. "Arabelle, Katara." I smiled at her, absorbing her image. She was the same height as me, and wore the same robes. Her hair was silky dark brown and her eyes were a pretty blue. She smiled back, looking me over. It was my turn now.
"Guys, this is... Zuko," I glanced in Zuko's direction. Zuko watched Aang — never taking his eyes off him. Aang immediately stiffened, as did Katara and Sokka.
"Guys, don't attack each other — Zuko! Don't!" But it was too late. Zuko had firebended, but Aang was already in the air, swinging his staff. I flipped in the air, avoiding Zuko's fire attacks, and bended the water in the air; Zuko was doused down — soaking. He glared at me but I just returned the look. I grabbed Zuko by the ear and dragged him away from the others.
"What are you thinking?! You just had to attack him, didn't you?" Zuko shook his head, wanting to get the water off his head.
"Yes, for your information, I had to," he replied, shaking his hands off. I placed my hands on his chest, freezing the water on his body. Then, when he moved his body, the ice cracked and fell to the ground, shattering.
"Now, when we go back, you're going to be a nice boy. Understood?"
"Nice boy? You're kidding." I gave him 'the look'. He sighed and we walked back over and Aang wouldn't take his gray eyes off Zuko.
"Aang, it's okay. Zuko won't do anything stupid now." Katara had a shocked look on her face. "What?"
"He actually listened to you?" she asked, her eyes widening. I nodded, giving her a look like 'yeah, why wouldn't he?' "That's a first."
"Oh, it isn't a first. It's pretty easy for me to make him do things," I replied, bending the water from Katara's pouch.
"He likes you, therefor he'll do anything to make you happy," Katara explained.
"I do not like her!" Zuko's outburst scared me, and his face was flushing a slight pink.
"There, right there! See that? That's called blushing." Zuko narrowed his eyebrows and glared at Katara.
"I am so going to kill you," he muttered. I rolled my eyes and faced Zuko.
"Why don't you go cool off, Zuko?" I asked the firebender. He just gave one more look at Aang, and stalked off, leaping down from the roof. I sighed.
"Anyway, why are you guys here?" I questioned.
"We just wanted to stop by for a hello," Sokka replied, swinging around his boomerang. "We're going to rescue Sokka's girlfriend after we visit the Air Temple."
"Oh, but I though you were staying in town longer?"
"We were, but we're running out of time before the eclipse happens," Katara informed me, "Aang needs to learn all four elements before the eclipse, since firebenders are most strong during that time." I got it now. "So, we're going to leave tomorrow at mid day." I nodded, packing up the blankets into a bag. "By the way, did you know I'm a waterbender too?" I stopped and looked at her.
"You are too?! Finally, I'm not alone!" I laughed, as did Katara, and I hugged her. She hugged me back, laughing still. I pulled away and she dug into ther pouch for something. She soon pulled out a scroll, that looked very old.
"Here, this'll help you," she handed it to me, and slung the pouch over her shoulder. "Unroll it." I did as she said, and a smile crept on my lips.
"Oh my god! It's a waterbending scroll! Where did you get it?"
"It's kind of a long story..." I giggled and rolled it up, sticking it into my robe pocket.
"Well, we've got to hit the road. We'll come visit you tomorrow before we leave, okay?" Aang smiled. I nodded, and they all climbed onto the Sky Bison.
"By the way, what is your Bison's name?" I called, as the creature started to take off.
"Appa!" Aang called, and they flew off. Hmmm... Appa...
"Ugh!" Zuko exclaimed, making me jump, and I hid behind a rock, seeing a reflection of flames shooting out of his hands in both directions. "Why doesn't anyone get me?!" he asked himself, kicking the air and blowing fire from his mouth. He was so furious... so... angry... alone. I stood up, and glanced at the raven-haired boy. His eyes were watery, and he exploded, fire flying everywhere.
And it hit me.
It burned my hands, and I felt my hands thumping and they were stinging. I felt my eyes become watery, and I fell onto my knees, my hands hurting like hell.
"Arabelle!" The firebender's voice rang, and I looked up at him, his face full of guilt and anger. "Oh my God — Arabelle — I'm sorry..." he apologized, bending down to help me up. He helped me up, and lead me to a nearby stream, and I put my hands in the water, relief rushing throughout my body. I sighed, and wiped my eyes with my wrist.
"Arabelle, I'm so sorry. I didn't know —"
"Zuko, it's fine," I replied, shocked at how guilty he felt. "Seriously... I'm fine, it's just a little burn." Suddenly, my hands began to glow a silvery color, and the pain just disappeared. I pulled my hands out of the water and looked them over. The burns, the pain — it was all just... gone. I didn't know what just had happened, honestly.
"I feel really bad about —"
"Zuko, it's fine. I'm okay, see?" I showed him my hands.
"Only if I hadn't attacked the Avatar..." he blamed himself. I lifted Zuko's chin and forced him to look into my eyes.
"Just shut up," I smiled, letting out a laugh. "I'm perfectly fine. What more do I need to say?" I asked, staring into his caramel orbs.
"I... I don't know..."
"Exactly... the past is the past... I'm fine now," I smiled reassuringly. I started to stand up, but my stupid shoe got caught on his boot wrap, and I fell onto him. He groaned as I landed on him. "Err... sorry," I whispered in his ear, and I felt goosebumps on his arm. I lifted myself off him, holding myself up just to look into his eyes. His eyes were glowing, fire glazing in each of them. I was starting to like him... a little bit. I mean sure, he was an arrogant jerk at times, but at least he wasn't psychotic. And he has a sense of humor... Well, it seems like it, anyway.
He bundles up all of his emotions and he has these walls that he's built up — he doesn't let anyone into him — unless he loves them.
And they love him.
And for some reason, I feel like I could be one of those few. Not that I'm saying I love him, I just think I've... done something for him to make him trust me. I'm slowly breaking down those walls — I just need to keep trying until they're crumbling and he's spilling all his secrets — all of his emotions — his feelings — out to me.
But for some odd reason, I feel like that won't ever happen.
"Umm... hey Arabelle..." Zuko's smooth voice suprised me. I sighed as I slipped on my shirt, and told him to come in.
"Hey, Zuko," I said, combing my hair.
"Yeah... I feel kinda bad for missing your birthday yesterday, so... happy late birthday?" I laughed as he walked over to me. He lifted his hand to show me a blue choker with a light blue jewel with the letter A engraved in the jewel. I couldn't help but smile.
"Oh Zuko... it's gorgeous!" I said, as I pulled him into a hug. He wrapped his arms around me, and I inhaled his amazing scent. My fingers brushed against his neck as I pulled away.
"Here, turn around." I turned around and Zuko put the necklace around my neck. I turned around, only to notice how close Zuko's face was to mine. I had to look into his amber eyes, and I found myself in a trance.
"Am I interrupting something?" a voice made me blush. I looked to see Aang. Zuko rubbed the back of his neck, and I flashed him a smile as I walked away from him, clutching the necklace Zuko gave me.
"So... Arabelle..." Aang broke off, rubbing his bald head, looking around nervously.
"Yes, Aan —" I asked, but I felt my voice cut off. Aang was kissing me. Me. And I thought he liked Katara. But oh how I was wrong. He liked me. But I didn't like him. That was when I started to realize who I liked...
"What the hell is going on here?!" An outraged voice that I was familiar with yelled. I pulled away from Aang, to see an astonished and angry Zuko.
"Zuko, it's not what —"
"You crossed the line, Avatar..." Zuko said, and started attacking Aang.
The fight went on for minutes — and it turned into a half hour. Both of them looked exhausted, yet they were still at it. I had to stop it... now. I waterbended as much as I could get from the air and doused them. Zuko was so pissed, he look like he could kill.
"Zuko... what are you thinking?!" I asked him, approaching him. He looked back at Aang.
"What do you mean what am I doing? What are you doing kissing him?!" he pointed at Aang.
"You know what," I poked my finger into his chest, "I'm getting tired of you being so nosy. How did you even know we were kissing?" I asked, narrowing my eyes.
"That doesn't matter! Why are you kissing him? You don't even like him!" he argued.
"First of all, I didn't kiss him. He kissed me. And second, it's not of your business what I do. Besides, you can't tell me what I can and can't do!" I spat, and fire burned in Zuko's eyes.
"I'm going to kill him."
"No, you're not."
"And why won't I?"
"Zuko... we don't have to fight..." I was ready to fight Zuko if I had to. And if we were both alive at the end of this fight — our friendship would end. Right then and there.
"I have to fight —"
"No, Zuko you don't. Everyone has a choice. Please..." I begged him.
"I love yo--"
"Hey, Zuko! Why don't you go wake your girlfriend up?!" Sokka's faint voice teased.
"Hey, Arabelle!" I heard Zuko's voice echo. I looked around, and I felt someone shaking my body.
"Go away!" I waved my hand in the air, and I felt more shaking. "Ugh!" I sat straight up, bonking my head against someone else's. Zuko's head to be more specific. So all of that... was just a crazy dream... phew!
"Ouch!" Zuko whispered, rubbing his head, as I was doing.
"Ugh... what is it Zuko?" I asked, sleepily.
"Apparently, I have to show you something," he replied in a dull voice. I giggled and he left my tent, letting me change into the outfit I 'had to wear', according to Katara. It turned out to be a Fire Nation outfit. It was a red skirt that went past my knees, and it had another layer of three awkward-looking squares. One was longer than the other two in the middle, and the other two were the same size. The top, however, had only one sleeve, and ended a few inches above my belly button. There was also one arm bracelet, which was pure gold. And lastly, there were wrist braces for each of my arm. (A/N: Google Katara's Fire Nation outfit. It looks like that. xD)
I walked out of the tent to see Aang, and Katara in deep conversation. While, Toph, she was sipping tea. Sokka must've went out to explore or something, because I didn't see him out there. And lastly, Zuko was sitting in front of my tent, waiting for me to come out. He immediately stood up, and he opened his mouth to speak but it just hung open.
"Ara..." he couldn't even finish saying my name.
"Oh, Belle! You look just gorgeous!" Katara smiled as she hugged me. I laughed and hugged her back. After she pulled away, she held a cone-shaped amulet with a small moon on the top of it. "Oh, and happy late birthday!" she said, and handed me the amulet. "This is water from the Spirit Oasis, in the North Pole. It has special properties, so I've been saving it for something special."
"Katara please —"
"No, no, no. I want you to have it," she insisted. I hugged her again and smiled at Zuko who was just staring at me.
"You do know it's rude to stare," I said to him as Katara walked away, putting the amulet in my pouch.
"I wasn't staring. I was simply watching you for a long period of time," he replied, a smirk on his lips. I laughed.
"Anyway, what did you need to show me?" I asked, curious.
"C'mon, I'll show you," he said in return.
"Think they'll ever kiss?" I heard Sokka ask.
"Probably." Both Katara and Aang said in unison. I tried to push away their comments, but I couldn't. It's like they were chasing me. Trying to tell me that it was going to happen.
I know it's long. xD Comment, rate & favorite! Love you!
