Chapter 1

It's A Love Story, Baby Just Say Yes

"Hey, did you not see me?" my friend Valerie said as she sat next to me in the theater room.
"Sorry," I mumbled, "but I just feel like crap."
"Depressed again?" she assumed.
"Why are you so depressed?"
"I don't know. It's natural, I guess."
I saw Demi enter the classroom and my stomach turned. She signaled me to come outside.
"I'll be right back," I told Valerie when I got up.
"What happened?" Demi asked when we were outside. "Why couldn't you just read?"
"It's... personal," I tried to explain. "I don't really want to talk about it."
"Okay.. you gonna be alright?" she asked in concern.
"Yeah... I guess."

After school, I went to managed to sneak away from my friend Krystal and went to my science class to talk to Mrs. Been about what happened during class. But when I got there, I saw that Kendall had beat me there.
"I can tutor her," he told Mrs. Been.
"I don't think you can tutor a dyslexic," she said. "It's very difficult."
"Wait. She's dyslexic?" Kendall asked.
"Yes. I just found out today too," she said. "Her brother came over and explained everything."
She made eye contact with me and Kendall turned around. He gave me a slightly disappointed "why didn't you tell me?" look.
The first thing I did was run away.
"Wait! Vanessa!" Kendall called.
Surprisingly, I was able to run to the front of the school, where I found my brother, Maverik.
"You told my teacher I was dyslexic?!" I demanded.
"Dad told me to tell all your teachers," he said as we walked to the parking lot. "He knew you wouldn't be able to tell them."
"Walk faster," I told him. "You didn't warn me?"
"You wouldn't have let me done it. Besides, they need to know that you have to work harder than everyone else."
"Walk faster."

When we got home, I ran out to the backyard. I sat on the floor near the gate and blasted "Forever and Always" on my iPod. I held one of my dogs in my lap. I tried not to cry. Normally, I cry when I'm alone, but now, I just couldn't. This has happened too many times. As if there wasn't anymore crap in my life.
I missed dinner. I stayed outside, alone with only my dogs for company.
My iPod died after a few hours, but I stayed outside anyway.
"Vanessa!" someone called.
Dang it. They found me.
"Hey!" It was Kendall. "We need to talk."
Tears welled up in my eyes.
"What happened after school?" he asked, sitting next to me.
"You heard what the teacher said," I said, looking at the floor.
"So you're dyslexic. What's the problem?"
I looked at him. His eyes were comforting. Like, I could open up to him.
"I haven't told anyone since sixth grade. I feel like I can't trust anyone. They won't understand me."
"Look, I know I'll never feel what you feel about having to deal with this challenge, but I do know one thing. You can trust me."
"Really. Trust me." He smiled. Then, he asked, "Why haven't you told anyone?"
"People are cruel. A lot of people are cruel. I can't tell anyone without having to worry about what they'll say. I can't even tell Demi."
"I agree with you. There are cruel people in this world. But you should know that I would never judge you. And same with Demi."
"It's harder to tell Demi though. She's hiding something from me too. I know it."
"I know, I can tell too. We can all tell. But anyway, if there's anything else you want to tell me anything else, you can. And I won't tell anyone if you don't want me to."
Oh, here we go. "I have asthma, my mom passed away three months ago, and I've been to a treatment center for depression."
Kendall stayed quiet. "Wow..." he said after a while. "There is a lot more to you than I thought."
I looked down.
"But that makes this a lot more interesting." He smiled.
I rested my head on his shoulder. Then, I said, "Don't tell anyone about my other problems."
"Okay. Oh, and... I kind of told the guys about you and me... and I'm pretty sure Logan told Demi. And, if you didn't know, they're a thing too."
"I knew it!" I exclaimed. "She never told me!"
"So.. you wanna go back inside? It's getting dark."
As Kendall helped me stand up, I realized something. I got what I wanted. A boyfriend. Not just any boyfriend. A boyfriend who doesn't judge me.
I was lucky.
