Chapter 1

Excuses

His lips were soft and gentle against mine and he held me as if he was scared I'd break.

When his lips left mine I looked up into his brown eyes in longing.

"Get it, Oliver!" someone yelled with a wink.

He shook his head and grinned.

"I'm going to be late." he whispered in my ear.

"So am I." I said breathlessly.

He pulled back to look into my eyes and I reached up to push aside a stray brown curl from his face.

"I love you."

They were three perfect words and he meant them.

Before I had time to respond his lips were on mine again.

"Get to class, lovebirds," a hall monitor yelled in annoyance.

I smiled and took a step back.

"For the record, Your love cannot compare to mine."

I dove into the classroom.

He had no time to respond and I knew I was going to pay for it later.

The hands of the clock moved faster than they ever had before.

My thoughts drifted to Oliver and a few fond memories brought a smile to my lips.

We had been friends then.

"I thought you loved her." I had whispered.
We were sitting in a corner booth at Oliver's favorite resturant.
"That's the word: loved."
He'd paused a moment staring down at his food and the strawberry shake in front of him.
Then his eyes rested on me and I looked away nervously, sipping my chocolate shake nonchalantly.
He grinned.
"Go ahead say it. I know you want to."
"Well... It was bound to happen. She's a whore."
I didn't look up into those eyes for several moments, but as the silence stretched on I did. I instantly regreted it.
His eyes were intent on mine, evaluating my tone and my expression.
"You were bound to get your heart broken." I continued, "I mean it happens to everyone at one time or another."
I began rambling and to my horror, Oliver listened intently to each word.
Finally, after countless pleading looks he interuppted.
"And you would know this...how? Have you ever even been in a relationship?"
His attempt to stop my rambling worked like a charm and his words stung.
I was silent for a long time before responding.
I cleared my throat and when next I met his eyes they were apologetic.
"Sophie--."
"No, it's fine. To answer your question yes I have. Two actually and they didn't end so well so naturally I speak from experience."
My words came out fast.
I remembered venting to him that night about the two huge mistakes I'd made in my life. I told him about the boys and how I never wanted to fall in love again, but I was thinking that it was already to late.
I was in love with Oliver.
He'd hugged me that night and said good night; promising to find me the right guy.
He was true to his word... He had.

"Sophie Miller!"

It was a loud yell and I looked up to find everyone gone but me.

"The bell rang didn't it?"

I looked over at the teacher.

"I'm sorry, Ms.G. It won't happen again. My full attention is on you next time." I muttered before running out into the hallway; still blushing.

I hit right into a stranger and my books flew from my hands.

"I'm so sorry." I said; reaching down to pick up my books.

"Don't worry about it. I enjoyed it."

My eyes widened and I giggled nervously.

A hand I knew well reached down and picked up the books before I could.

Oliver straightened up and glared at the stranger.

"I've got it from here, champ." he said tightly.

The stranger nodded with a smile and turned to go, but not before throwing one last flirtacious smile my way.

I laughed and Oliver grabbed my hand; pulling me away.

"He comes near you again and his a** is mine."

It was a rough growl and I giggled.

"You're cute when you're jealous." I said releasing his hand and heading for my locker.

"It's Friday and my mother wants to meet you." I continued after a moment of silence.

His eyes clouded over.

"I can't today. I've got something I have to do."

My jaw clenched and I slammed my locker.

"Come on, Sophie. I can go any other day."

"Fridays are the only days she has free, Oliver and you know that!"

"Sophie--."

"It's always the same excuse! 'I'm busy' or 'I've got something to do.'"

I headed for the bus but his hand wraps around my waist.

"At least let me take you home."

I shoke my head.

"The bus is fine."

Without another word, I moved out of his grasp and boarded the bus for the first time in two years.
