Chapter 1

New Expectations

Lily sighed and straightened her back up. She had just finished unpacking her trunk in her dormitory, and she was exhausted from the long day. She had just flopped on her bed and closed her eyes, when her best friend Annie ran up to the bed and roughly pulled Lily off the bed.
"Hey! Ow... Oh Annie! Hi!" Lily sputtered, not expecting to see Annie there.
"Lil!" cried Annie, using her nickname for her best friend, "I missed you so much! How was your summer? What did you do? Did you go anywhere? I did. My family and I went..." She trailed off, noticing she was babbling.
Lily smiled. She missed chatty Annie there, she remembered suddenly, hugging Annie tightly.
Annie pulled away finally, studying Lily seriously. "Now, first things first. We need to go down to the common room and mingle!" On the word mingle, Annie shimmed in place, her eyes shining.
"Oh, I don't know, Annie. I just got here, so maybe I'll just lay here and-"
"ARE YOU CRAZY? OF COURSE NOT!!" Annie grabbed Lily's wrist, and shook her around, then dragged her down the stairs to the common room. Annie, more social than Lily, immediately went to the large group of people standing to the side, mainly comprised of 6th years. Lily warily followed. In the middle of the group were James Potter, and his sidekick, Sirius Black. Lily rolled her eyes. She knew all to well how these boys were always pulling some sort of a prank, especially on her other best friend, Severus Snape, from Slytherin. They all hated each other, for reasons Lily failed to see, but no one was going to hex her best friend, not without SOME consequences, so she hated them as well, with a burning passion. She stood there, dazed for a few moments, then, realizing it, shook her head and her eyes focused on the boys in front of her. As she did, she saw James wink cheekily at her, then pull a Snitch out of his pocket, and started to toss it around, oh too casually. She felt herself tighten up angrily, and then she stiffly walked away.
James grin faltered.
Ugh. Could James be any more annoying? She pondered. Probably not. Some things don't change, even after a whole summer. Speaking of things that changed over the summer, she noticed Severus had changed a lot. She recalled him talking with all those Slytherins she hated so much for all those years. Oh well. She shook the thought out of her head. She didn’t need any more stress. She had become a prefect over the summer, therefore she felt responsible for all the Gryffindor problems, which wasn't even her responsibility, but still. She had to notice Remus Lupin, one of the 'four', as she liked to think of them as, (James Potter, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew) had also become a prefect.
Probably to keep those 'friends' of his in check, She thought bitterly. She was so caught up in her thoughts; she didn’t hear James come up to her.
"Hey, Evans! Come join the party! You're sitting over here like you're better than all of us or something." He winked again. Winked?? What was it with him and the winking? He was a hopeless flirt.
"I am not better than all of you. Maybe YOU, but not everyone else." It was rude, she knew, but he had provoked her.
He gaped at her, at an apparent loss of words. Sirius came up to them and jokingly punched James on the arm. "Hey! What's the problem here, children?” he joked, but she was not in the mood. "Why can't you guys just fly away on a broomstick or something? I have better things to do."
"Oh, I don't think you do, Evans." James had gotten his voice back. Just as obnoxious as usual, if not worse. "Come on! Hang out with the rest of our year. You deserve a little fun." He playfully shook her shoulder, but she wasn’t buying it. "No thanks, I told Severus I'd meet him in the library about now."
James grin turned ugly. "Oh. Snivilous. Why do you always hang around with that LOSER?" His words stung her. She knew he hated him, but to proclaim it to her face? He was even worse than she thought. "You know what, Potter? He's NOT a loser. He just so happens to be my best friend. How would you like it if I started to diss Sirius in front of you? Wouldn't like it so much, now would you? And why do you even pick on Severus anyways? You have absolutely no right to say anything about him." And with that, she stood up and walked away jauntily. He just stood there, the fire reflecting off of his glasses, at a complete loss for words.
