Chapter One
Hayley was on the bus coming home from school, happy it was the last day. She was sitting alone, friendless, then felt a piece of paper smack the back of her head. She turned around and glared at the back of the bus and saw Mark Vane laughing his butt off with his friend Jacob White. They were always making fun of her for not having friends and being different. She was used to them, but they kept throwing stuff at her and when they ran out of paper they resorted to pennies, which made Hayley snap.
"Stop it now! Go jump out the window, jerks!" she hollered back at them.
"Oh, why dont you make us, Carter!" hooted Mark with laughter.
She turned around and faced the front, fuming with anger.
"God, I wish I could teach them a lesson." she muttered to herself.
Suddenly she heard a scream, and looked back to see Mark and Jacob being beaten up by their book bags, which were floating in mid-air. Everyone was freaking out, but Hayley sat in her seat laughing so hard she was almost crying. This continued until the bus reached her house, and she got off after the bus driver finally noticed what was happening to the boys in the back of the bus and went to help them.
She walked up the front porch of her house, and her eyes bulged at what she saw. It was an owl with a letter attached to it's leg, pecking at the front door. She opened the door, and it hooted and flew into the kitchen, where Hayley's mother was doing bills.
She ran into the kitchen after the owl, and her mom was too busy to notice the owl, or her, until it landed on the table and hooted. Her mother jumped and dropped her pen, and she took the letter off of the owls leg, which hooted happily and flew out the window, and read the envelope.
"Oh, no. I knew this was going to happen eventually, but now?" she whispered to herself.
Hayley stood in the frame of the kitchen door confused.
"Mom, what are you talking about? And what was with that owl?" she asked, causing her mother to jump and notice her presence.
Her mother sighed, "Hayley, honey, I think it's about time for you to find out what you really are, what I really am, what your father was."
"And what is that?" she asked, and dropped her school bag on the floor and took a seat next to her mom.
"Hayley, I am a witch, and your father was a wizard, making you a witch." she said, sure that her daughter wouldn't believe her.
Hayley snorted, sure that her mother was just pulling her leg. "Yeah right, prove it."
Hayley's mother stood up and took her daughters hand, and led her upstairs and into their old dusty attic. She went over to an old chest, which Hayley had tried, unsuccessfully, to get into before, since it was locked. She got down on her knees and pulled a key out of her back pocket, and placed it into the lock, and it turned with a click. The chest opened up, revealing long black robes and books like Potions 101 and How to Play Quidditch.
Hayley was about to ask her mom what Quidditch was, when her mom quickly dug deep into the chest and pulled out a stick, no, a wand. She held it with great tenderness, and seemed to be off in a little world all her own.
"Mom, what is all this?" asked Hayley, as she knelt down next to her mother.
"It is all my wizarding stuff from when I was at Hogwarts." she answered dreamily.
"What's Hogwarts?" she asked with interest.
She smiles slightly, "It is a school where they teach young witch's and wizards how to use their magic, and many other things. There are 4 houses, like groups or family's, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, Slytherin, and Gryffindor. I was placed into Hufflepuff, and your father was a Gryffindor. Bravest one in his class, must have been why he caught my eye. No girl could resist that Scottish accent of his."
Hayley's jaw was nearly on the ground, "So you are a witch, and you can do magic! Show me!"
"Ok," her mother smiled, "Lumos!"
The tip of her wand suddenly lit up, brightening the dark attic, while Hayley just sat, her mind reeling. Soon enough, the light flickers out.
"Hm, I'm a bit rusty." chuckled Hayley's mother, "Now, help me carry this down stairs, and then we can read your letter and you can ask me all those questions I know you're thinking about."
Her mother put the wand back in the trunk, and shut it slowly, almost scared it would brake. They both took seperate ends of the heavy trunk, and carried it down stairs into the living room.
"My, you are such a strong girl, Hayley." said her mother once they sat it down gently by the couch.
She headed into the kitchen, but quickly returned with the letter, which was addressed to Hayley, and gave it to her daughter.
"Well, open it up!" said her mother with encouragement.
Hayley quickly opened the letter, and read what it said:
Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry
Headmaster: Albus Dumbledore
(Order of Merlin, First Class, Grand Sorc., Chf. Warlock, Supreme Mugwump, International Confed. of Wizards)

Dear Miss Carter,

We are pleased to inform you that you have been accepted at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Please find enclosed a list of all necessary books and equipment.

Term begins on September 1. We await your owl by no later than July 31.

Yours sincerely, Minerva McGonagall, Deputy Headmistress.

Hayley read over the letter again, just to be sure she had read it correctly, and she also pulled out the list of things mentioned in the letter that she would need, and handed it to her mother while she read it again.
"Alright, Hayley. Now that we know you're going to be going to the best school of witchcraft and wizardry in the world, and I do mean the best, what do you want to know?" asked her mother, tucking the list into her pocket.
"I want to know why you never told me about this, why would you want to cover it up? This is amazing!" said Hayley with excitement.
"Hayley, at your age it would be hard to understand, but I suppose I should tell you. But before I do, you must know that not all wizards are good, many are bad, bad enough to kill for what they want. Your father didn't die in an accident at work, although it was his job that ended up getting him killed. He was killed by two very evil people, a witch and a wizard, under the orders of a dark lord, He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named. Everyone is too scared to say his real name, as am I. Because your father was an Auror, sort of like an investigator for the wizard world, You-Know-Who thought he was an obstacle in his journey to take over the wizarding world, so he ordered him to be killed by two of his most loyal followers. I refuse to even tell you who they are, but they are evil, I know that much. Once your father was killed, they were supposed to come after us, to shut us up. We were living in Scotland, and you were only a baby at the time, and I feared for your safety, so I fled with you back here, and remained hidden with you for your protection."
Hayley listened with interest, "Well, it seems there aren't any dark lords around here anymore."
Her mother nodded, "Yes, he is not around any more, but there are no wizards around here, so I thought it would be best to hide your true identity until you were older, so we wouldn't risk exposing ourselves to muggles, non magical people."
"Well, I guess that makes sense." muttered Hayley, "I can't wait, this is going to be wicked!"
Her mother chuckled, "Just like your father, ready for anything life throws at you. Well, I ordered a pizza for supper to celebrate your last day of school, now muggle school. It should be here any minute now."
Suddenly the door bell rang, and after paying the delivery boy, her mother walked back in, holding a large pepperoni pizza.
"Yummy!" hollered Hayley, as she took out a slice and bit into it.
They turned on TV and watched some I Love Lucy re-runs, and after eating her fair share, Hayley headed off to bed. As soon as her head hit the pillow, she was asleep, dreaming about being a witch and having many adventures.
