____, Jared? The library's closing." At the sound of the librarian's voice, you look up from the book you've been reading.
Obediently, you and your best friend Jared step out into the street. It's winter, so the sky is already dark and the icy air stings as it pushes against your face and into your lungs.
You really don't want to go home. Your parents got divorced a few years back, and now, you're with your mom and the latest in her long string of lousy, creepy boyfriends.
____?" Jared looks down at you, concern evident in his face and voice. At a very ripped 6'3 (he's the school wrestling champion four years running), he's a comforting person to have in your corner.
"Are you okay?" Jared asks, his dark hair falling over his warm brown eyes. You sigh. "I just really hate my mom's new boyfriend. Kyle." "Kyle? What happened to Max?" Jared asks.
"So what's wrong with Kyle?" A thought occurs to Jared and his face darkens, going from happy-go-lucky to deadly. "If he's laid a finger on you, I swear I'll--"
Ever since elementary school, Jared's been ferociously protective of you. These days, he even hangs out with you all afternoon, every afternoon, as you put off going home.
"Why don't you come over and hang out with me and my dad again this evening?" Jared asks. "You know you're always welcome. Last night was awesome. Dad and I both had a blast with you."
"Don't be stupid." He gives you a playful little shove and grins down at you. "Come on, before we get snowed in and have to eat each other to survive." History class was about the Donner party today.
It only takes a few minutes to get to Jared's house. He barely has time to open their door and let you in before his dad appears in the mudroom to greet you.
Pastor Lucas is very bald and very tall, though not as tall as Jared. Usually, he's really funny and relaxed, but something's off today. He looks nervous, and his voice shakes a little as he says hi.
___!" he says."I was hoping you'd come by today." He turns to Jared. "Jared, Levi's here." Jared's eyes widen, and he tenses.
"Levi? What's he doing here?" Jared asks. "He has a message from Harold," Lucas replies. Jared takes a step back, looking like he's seen a ghost. "No. Not now."
Jared sounds like he's in some kind of trance. He backs up again, and steps on your foot.
___!" Jared cries, but before you can reply, you hear a voice call from the direction of their living room, "Jared? Is that you?"
As you walk into the living room you see an unfamiliar form sprawled on the Lucas' couch. He leaps to his feet when he sees you, and you're suddenly looking at the most gorgeous guy you've ever seen.
His smooth blonde hair flops slightly into his perfectly sculpted face and bright crystal-blue eyes, which dig eagerly into you. "
___," Jared says from behind you, "this is Levi. Levi, meet ___."
To your surprise, Levi puts his hand on his chest and bends at the waist, bowing low. "
___. It's such an honor."
He straightens and goes back to his excited staring. Eventually, this gets awkward, and you say, "What?" "I didn't think you'd be so pretty," Levi says matter-of-factly.
At this, Pastor Lucas clears his throat. "
___," he says, "we need to talk."
Whatever you say, Pastor Lucas and Jared exchange nervous glances. "No, nothing like that," Lucas reassures you. "Please sit." Levi flops on the couch beside you, flinging his arm over your shoulders.
Pastor Lucas glowers at Levi. Levi doesn't look very embarrassed, but he takes his arm back, and Jared sits on your other side.
___," Lucas says, then stops, looking miserable. "I don't know where to begin. Years of waiting for this day, and none of the scripts I had in my head will do." The look on his face frightens you.
"We'll start with your parents," Pastor Lucas says finally. "Not the ones you grew up with. Your real parents. King William and Queen Daphne of Gildeon."
