Elf-Queen of Gildeon: A WWYFF Part 3

by: Sekiraku

Recap: Not only are you an elf with an insane aunt who wants you dead, but you might have the potential to become the most powerful elf who's ever lived. Go you! :)

  1. 1

"I'm the most powerful elf? Why?" you ask. "Well, we don't know for sure that you are," Lucas replies. "Genetically, it's likely, or so my son tells me."

  2. 2

Lucas shakes his head. "No, not Jared. My real son." Jared flinches visibly.

  3. 3

Lucas doesn't seem to notice. "His name is Colin. He's the resitance's Chief Healer! But the point is, as far as inherited ability goes, you're... explosive, to put it mildly."

  4. 4

"Yep. So don't blow us up, 'kay?" Levi says, then he laughs and flings his arms wide. "POW!!" "Levi, shut up," Jared says softly, giving you a worried glance. "__? Are you okay?"

  5. 5

"Of course she isn't okay," Lucas puts in. "She's had a full day of school, then had all this dumped on her." "Food," Levi announces. "A good meal may not fix things, but it sure won't hurt."

  6. 6

"What do you feel like, ____?" Levi grins and sweeps you a bow. "Any comfort food you like. Ask, and you shall receive."

  7. 7

"Excellent choice, madam!" Levi whirls into the kitchen, and a second later you hear humming and pans clattering.

  8. 8

"(Your answer). So who is he, anyway?" Lucas smiles. "He's a knight-in-training, like Jared. He's been stationed in the city to keep an eye on the highway and the airport. In case Hazel shows up."

  9. 9

"He's also my brother," Jared says quietly. "Only by blood, though. We don't know each other very well. We haven't spoken in years."

  10. 10

This kills conversation, and you sit in silence enlivened only by the crashes and singing from the kitchen. Jared slips his arm comfortingly around you, like he has a million times before.

  11. 11

"Oh, if I was a flower growin' wild and free, all I'd want is you to be my sweet honeybee..." Levi warbles from the kitchen. Jared screws up his face, and you dissolve into helpless giggles.

  12. 12

"Dinner!" Levi calls. Lucas says grace, and you dig in. The food is absolutely delicious, the flavors weaving in and out of one another in a perfectly balanced tapestry of tastes.

  13. 13

"M'lady is too kind," Levi says grandly. "But I'm sure it was that excellent blessing that did it." "I guess all the pastoring wore off on me." Lucas grins. "Even if it was just to get close to you."

  14. 14

"To get close to you." The words rattle around in your mind for a few minutes as you plow through your food, as if they're trying to reveal something. You try to figure it out as you continue eating.

  15. 15

You're about to ask for seconds when suddenly, it clicks. Shock goes through you like an electric charge, stopping your mind and freezing your blood. Your fork clatters on the table as you drop it.

  16. 16

"____? What's wrong?" Levi asks, but you're not looking at him. You're looking at Jared. Jared, your best friend since first grade, when he walked up to you and asked if he could eat lunch with you.

  17. 17

"Jared was in on it. You told him to be my friend so you could get closer." You know you're right by the guilty looks on their faces, even before Jared says pleadingly, "Don't jump to conclusions."

  18. 18

"You coached him," you cry, speaking to Lucas, but looking at the miserable Jared. "You showed him pictures of me and told him to make friends with me. It wasn't real... it was NEVER real!"

  19. 19

Jared is protesting, but you can't hear him over the memories. Riding bikes, getting grounded together, cheering at his wrestling matches, him holding you as you cried over your parents' divorce.

  20. 20

For you, he's the one person in your life you can rely on for unconditional love, the one who's always in your corner, the one who's always there. For him, you're a job. It's too painful to believe.

  21. 21

"I need to be getting home," you say dizzily, staggering to your feet. "I'm sorry, but I can't let you do that," Lucas says, looking at the table. "It's safer here. You can use the guest room."

  22. 22

"We know that Lord Harold will be opening the portal anytime now," Levi says quietly. "It's better if we're all here when that happens."

  23. 23

"Why don't you go on to bed, ____?" Lucas says gently. "We'll talk more tomorrow. About everything. But if you don't get some sleep you're going to pass out. Things will look better in the morning."

  24. 24

"_____..." Jared looks up at you, his eyes pleading.

  25. 25

Sorry, but... whatever your answer was, you feel marrow-deep exhaustion wash over you. You can't deal with this now. "Good night," you mumble to everyone, then turn and go.
